Last week I posted the following thread:
"In XDCAM EX Clip Browser I made logging notes on my dailies on my laptop computer. I HAVE DUPLICATE XDCAM EX dailies on another computer (desktop work station). I'd like to find the Clip Browser data file, (that stores all the logging notes I made), and copy that over to my desktop, so I can pick up where I left off, still using Clip Browser on my desktop. Does anyone know where I can find that Clip Browser program file? I guess there is also a preferences file also?"
I am restarting this thread, because I've subsequently spoken with Sony Professional support; and I fear my previous subtitle, "Where is the data file stored?" may have been confusing to readers. No dvxuser reader posted a reply to my query, so I assume (1) either the question was considered too trivially entree level to discuss (in which case my thread was confusing, since while my post may be entree-level, it certainly isn't trivial); or (2) no one knows how to log dailies on two different computers, using XDCAM Clip Browser.
Let me reframe the issue of logging dailies on two different computers, by making a direct analogy to Final Cut Pro, with which most of you are familiar. In FCP, you can begin logging dailies, and then hand off that FCP file to another editor, (say an assistant editor), who can import that file to their own computer, and complete the task of logging the dailies -- just so long as they have the same media on their computer. My question has been: How do we accomplish this same handing-off-of-the-torch using XDCAM Clip Browser?
The answer from Sony Professional is that you cannot export a data file with all the logging data, as in FCP, and give it to another person, so that they can complete the logging in XDCAM Clip Browser on another computer, which has the same media on it's hard drive. You can only convey the logging data to someone else, by copying the entire XDCAM media files to that person.
As it was explained to me by Sony Professional, the reason you cannot simply swap data files back and forth between computers, as we can do with FCP, is because in XDCAM Clip Browser the logging data is created as meta-data that lives with the media files (those long folder trees created by the EX-1 and EX-3). Therefore, in order to give the logging data to another editor, you must give that person the media files -- because that is where the logging data was stored. To be precise, each time you select "Update" in the lower left hand corner of the logging pane, the logging data is saved to the meta-data files attached to the XDCAM media.
