XDCAM 510p

I need to shoot a production and the producer asked me to use a better camera than my dvx100. We cannot afford to rent a digiBeta and we need to edit the footage on a standard PC.

So as far as i have read, my best option is to rent an XDCAM 510p since i need Progressive scan, it has interchangable lenses, 2/3 CCDs and real 16.9.

However i am afraid of the recording format. It sounds great. 23 Gb discs that record files that are easily transfer to a PC. The 510 records on DVCAM whichis enough i think for me. Would i see an increase in quality recording with the 530 MPEG IMX? What software will i need?

I want to edit in Vegas.PD150 DV files work good in it. Will this XDCAM files work good too?

Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks!

Recording directly in DVCAM format will i need a deck to download clips to a pc or i will just be able to plug the camera to a notebook using firewire?

If you record in DVCAM mode, Vegas should easily ingest it, yes. I don't think Vegas supports MPEG-IMX, but I could be wrong on that.

The camera does have firewire out, but I haven't tried it. I have worked a lot with the PDW530 and it is a fantastic camera. With an RCP-721 paint box, you can tweak to your heart's content, and the dynamic range is really, really good.

Depending on the rental price, the 510 would be a decent option, and it should be soon that Avid will be able to handle this. A really cool feature is the proxy video with timecode directly to a laptop. FYI, the 510 is DVCAM only...the 530 has the IMX codec. with a 23GB disk, that means approx. 90 minutes of record time (just watch the lithium batteries -these cameras are pigs). Just so you know, the media records to the disk, and the disk is supposed to be read at 50x into an NLE from one of their XD players. With the ability of proxy video & timecode, this process should become incredibly handy and fast. One would still have to look at the material carefully to ensure there are no problems with the picture however...

Also, based on your time period, you might want to consider Sony's new DSR-450WS; it's supposed to be shipping for NAB, but don't quote me on that. I think I read that on the Sony site. And the Panny SDX900 is also a good camera, but might not be in your price range.
