FS7: XDCA-FS7 Extension unit discussion

Knowing Sony quiet well, I can tell you that 4K capability was not an afterthought. It is part of Sony's strategy across the product lines. Even the little X70 will receive 4K update in 2015.

I as well will stick to 4K shooting as much as is practical.

the biggest films of our time - the most FX heavy films - Marvel films - have been shot on a 2k camera - the Alexa. Resolution does not matter - it's perceived sharpness. Remember when Rian Johnson came out against Red back 8 years ago saying the same thing - that resolution is important but there are other things that are more important. Now he's the director of the next Star Wars. Did anyone archive it? I found it and put it up: http://www.kittyguerrilla.com/RedFacts/Red_Facts.html and his great rebuttal: http://www.kittyguerrilla.com/RedRebuttal/Red_Rebuttal.html

I work in network spots that usually have a bit of Motion Graphics or VFX and in that world, 4K is heavily desired which is why so much of it is shot on cameras that offer higher res. Obviously Alexa own the higher end market - Avengers, Marvel, etc... However, I tend to work on the middle to lower end budget, commercial stuff and for those the Alexa is not used as much because of cost.

Also, none of the stuff I do is for a 4K finish, it's always 4K for an HD finish to have options in post. 4K is very important at this point and all the clients I work with prefer 4K.

It really depends on what segment of the market you are working in. For my craptastic bill paying jobs - reality, events, etc... nobody wants 4K, but for my better paid jobs, it's 4K all the time.

perceived sharpness is what matters and cleanness of a sensor - not how many Ks of resolution an image is. Rian Johnson is no dummy.

My take on this (and I have not read all the bits) is that most '1080' cameras (excluding the F35 and a maybe few others?) are simply soft. Doubtless really sharp 2-2.5k looks great in a theatre and is 'enough'

How does one get sharp 2-2.5k? Well you can buy an F35 or a slightly soft '4k' camera, the latter generally being more available/usable

Has anyone with the extension unit tested the pro res recording against regular intenral modes yet?

Oh, and on the other topic, I absolutely love shooting 4k and will do it wherever possible. I'd be happy to leave 1080p behind - certainly as an acquisition resolution.

I have the extension unit. ProRes isn't enabled yet. I'm anxious to see how it compares to the 7Q's 4KtoHD ProRes mode, because that is some of the best footage I've seen out of a camera in this price range. So sharp and detailed. Not that the XAVC UHD and HD aren't good quality... they are. But if I can get sharp, 10-bit high-bitrate ProRes without the 7Q attached, that would be a great option for some of my projects.

No Prores on the extension unit yet? Do you have a date when that will come? I am back and forth between buying the extension and not. My reasons are for ProRes, V-lock, power options, and balance. My camera comes on Friday so looking for more extension unit feedback, thanks.

Fingers crossed that version 5.0 firmware for the F5 will be released any day now since it is almost mid-December. I'm guessing the 5.0 FW will benefit the R5 recorder as well to help add codec options with the FS-7 for double recording internal & external, but time will tell. http://andersonvideoproductions.com/ Sony F5, PMW-500 XDCAM, Canon C300, BMCC and Panasonic HD
