FS7: XAVC-I to ProRes for FCP7 batch export

Cheers.

I think a review, tips 'n tricks on Catalyst Browser and Catalyst Prepare will be published tomorrow. I do one of these entries a month and its mainly so that I can document my very own findings so I won't forget them ;) Have you seen the move Momento? (joke)

I am slowly making progress on the post issues, but now am stuck. I surprisingly had to shoot something today in 4K XAVC-I .
I'm sending the files to client in the AM but they have no experience with XAVC and will; be in a big hurry so I'm trying to give him both 4K and HD versions of the files.
I transcoded for the client into ProRes UHD sing Resolve ( first time using the program.)
However I can't seem to figure out how to get it to make HD versions.

I read Dennis' little;e mini- tutorial, but if you don't already know Resolve that leaves out major details - like how to get your files into the timeline in true first place). I went into the Project settings and I think told it to scale to HD, but all I 'm getting is some form of UHD whose files are about 75-80% the size of the full UHD ProRes transcodes.

Any suggestions? I know I can do it in Catalyst Browse but that means one at a time. though I could have easily done that this evening while screwing around with this.

Oh yeah - how you do reduce the audio files/tracks to 2?

It sounds like the update just released for Catalyst Browse restores batch processing, so that may be an option.

As for Resolve, my typical workflow for batch converting goes like this:
- Make new project
- Put all clips to be transcoded in the Media Pool
- Select all, then "Timeline with selected clips" (or very similar wording) from a right click menu
- It may ask if you want to match settings. Say yes - timeline can be 4k, even if you want 1080 files.
- You now have every clip on the timeline. If you just need to export, go to the deliver tab.
- One the deliver tab choose the output codec and frame size, make sure you select "render as individual clips" and "use original file names"
- For audio, on the deliver tab you can select the number of output audio tracks.
- Render

It's something like that.
That's about it really.

I admit that when I wrote that Davinci Resolve transcoding tutorial., at the time I was using version 9 of Davinci Resolve which automatically put clips on the timeline when you brought them into them media pool. After v10 came out and now v11 I could not get it to be automatic anymore and had to start creating the initial timeline but never went back and updated my tutorial. Maybe I will now.

Here's what you do after you import your clips to the media pool:

Go to the EDIT panel and at the top right you right click in empty spot under TIMELINES and you will get this menu:

timeline1_zps339b3db2.png

Select "CREATE NEW TIMELINE".

A new menu will popup like this:

timeline2_zps7013c9ad.png

By DEFAULT the BOX will be checked next to "EMPTY TIMELINE". UN-CHECK this because you do not want an EMPTY timeline.

Press the "CREATE NEW TIMELINE" button and now all the clips from your media pool will automatically go to your timeline.

They will now appear in your COLOR GRADING panel, and your DELIVER PANEL for transcoding.

Thanks Dennis, However I still couldn't get my 4K clips to come out as 1080. I must have something wrong in the settings.

On the DELIVER panel, you should see a slew of output options, codec, frame rate, audio, and resolution should be there as well.

Thanks Dennis ,
I was up very very late figuring this outlast night . I didn't expect to shoot yesterday and suddenly had to provide solutions that I wasn't ready for last night.

First I finally figured out the Catalyst Browse delivery method ( under my nose the whole time) but then ran into a couple of issues with CB . 1st of all no batch transcode and oddly it would not see a second USB 3 drive in my machine ( the one I needed to deliver to !) So after screwing around with that for a while I decided to bite the bullet and tackle Resolve. That took a little doing since you hadn't updated your tutorial yet but it was great to get me into Resolve finally as that's what I need to learn anyway and I know I'm gonna love it. ( I have the Ripple Tutorial and an Artist Color 3 wheel device just waiting for a few spare minutes)

So I got the Pro Res 4K batch transcode working fine in Resolve and then for some reason I must have made a mistake on the 1920 settings and stayed up later and later trying until I went to bed after 4AM.
This morning I wake up to find there's been an update to Catalyst Browse and its a piece of cake to do a batch transcode + it now sees the second drive!

its a quickly moving target out there and though I get PO'd at Sony for not having all this worked out from the get-go. I do appreciate that they seem to be working overtime to get the kinks worked out.

Batch transcode was just released yesterday under version 1.1 so make sure you update to the latest version, batch is there. YOu can drag over many clips or use shift key to select individual clips.

Since you transcoded through both softwares, Davinci and Catalyst, can you comment on how long it took to render in each one?

I'm on my phone so short answer.

To prep sound in resolve you have to get it right before adding clips to your timeline.

add clips to media pool
highlight all
right click - clip properties
soind ttab
change to 2 channel.
optionally make mono - most llikely
now add clips to time line
then export
