FS7: XAVC Help Please!

Hi all,

I have a problem with a clip I shot on the F7S. The clip is on the card and as long as my card is connected it's fine, but as soon as I take out the card it disappears. There is a little camera icon is on the clip. I've tried everything and nothing works. I can't even export the clip! Does anyone know how to take care of this problem or if there's converter out there that would let me bring in the clip and turn it into prores? The clip was shot on the XAVC L 30p format. Any help would be greatly appreciated - seeing the client tomorrow...
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

I'm a little perplexed by the construction of the question. If the clip is stored on the card, then of course if you remove the card the computer can no longer see the clip.

Catalyst Browse is free Sony software that would permit you to do the desired transcode from XAVC to ProRes. However, your only problem is that the clip is not stored on the computer, you should just copy the clip off the card and onto a storage or edit drive.

Am I missing something here?

[h=3]Reimport a clip[/h] Two situations warrant reimporting a clip:

  • If the clip was not completely imported: If you cancel or quit Final Cut Pro before an import is finished, a Camera icon appears on the bottom-left corner of the clip. This icon indicates that Final Cut Pro is using the media on the camera for playback (instead of using the QuickTime file that was created during import).

To play a clip with a Camera icon, Final Cut Pro locates the media on either a connected camera or in a connected, available camera archive. (See Access media on an archive or disk image for more information.) If Final Cut Pro can’t locate the media in one of those locations, the clip will go offline and display the Missing Camera alert icon.
  • If the clip’s source media file is not available: If a clip’s source media file is moved or deleted, or the volume it is located on is disconnected from the computer, a Missing File icon is displayed on the clip. To restore the clip, you can reimport it.
See Alert icons for more information about alert icons.
When you reimport a clip, Final Cut Pro automatically connects to the necessary camera or camera archive. There is no need to manually mount a camera archive before reimporting.

  • Do one of the following:
    • Connect the camera that contains the clip to your computer, and turn it on. This will bring the clip online, but the clip will still display the Camera icon in the lower-left corner.
    • Insert the memory card that contains the clip in your computer or connected card reader.
See About memory cards and cables for more information.
    • Make sure the camera archive that contains the clip is located in one of the Final Cut Pro camera archives.
See Create and manage camera archives for more information.
  • In Final Cut Pro, do one of the following:
    • To reimport one clip: Select the clip in the Browser.
    • To reimport all clips in an event: Select the event in the Libraries list.
  • Choose File > Import > Reimport from Camera/Archive.
The clip or clips are reimported.

So, your clip didn't properly import and is being read off the card. Reimport it.

Hey, vide ovation,

Thanks so much for your help. I tried all that, but it didn't work.
However, I sort of found a work around:
I brought in the clip in a new library and created a new event/project. It's finally not showing me the little camera icon and I can export, so I'm exporting it as XDCAM 50, then giving it a new name and then bringing it in again to the correct library, event. Would love to know how to deal with this in the future though...

Alternatively, get Catalyst Browse, use it to transcode difficult clips to ProRes.

XDCAM 50 is not a good codec for intermediate... Better quality use ProRes.

I don't use FCPX so I can't offer more specific help.

The latest version (10.2) of FCPX - just released during NAB - allows for direct importing of XAVC I or L footage (or the 50 422 mpeg). But I would always first copy contents of the XQD card to your hard drive and then import. And then you can either either edit natively or select to transcode to ProRes during the import.
