XAVC Codec

I'm new to the Sony A7 cameras and the xavc codec. I'm looking for help regarding how to download and save the video taken, plus how to convert to prores to edit on FCPX - or maybe I don't need to. I know Sony mentions a free software - called something Memories - but is this a professional way to go about it?

Congratulations on your new A7. Good news: FCPX will import and save your XAVC files, as well as edit them natively (no need to convert). XAVC actually edits better than AVCHD.

Best of luck.

Still looking for help regarding XAVC to Prores. There are some occasions when I do need to transcode to prores but when I do the clip's properties still show it's an mp4 file. Does anyone know how to transcode in FCPX and actually edit those clips?
Appreciate any help on this...

When importing to FCPX, check "Create optimized media" next to the "Transcoding:" option. This will create ProRes files.

There are many good video tutorials for FCPX.

Thanks Dan. Unfortunately when you do that the files are saved in the library's optimized media folder but what stays in the event browser is the mp4 files...

I have the Sony RX10, which just got the firmware upgrade 2.0 to add the Sony XAVCS codec. I'm using PPro CS6 on the PC, Does anyone know if this new codec can be imported into PPro CS6? I have to order the newer SD cards to record it, so I can't test it to see right now.

If there's optimised files, FCPX will use those. The show in Finder in the event browser takes you to the original media though...

As you import into FCPX, if you have clicked the checkbox to create Optimimized media, it does create prores files. However, in FCPX if you highlight the clip in the Browser and go to the Info pane in the Inspector, that info still lists the original file format, not the transcode. So if you're looking at that and it doesn't say Prores, that doesn't mean it didn't Optimize. Or at least it used to work this way - I rarely transcode anything anymore.

Also, as of (I think) the 10.1.2 update earlier this year, you are no longer restricted on where you can store those Optimized files - they don't even have to be in the Library.

Im wondering this as well, since I use mostly CS6 and am looking at a camera that records xavc s. I've seen a couple transcoders avail for purchase.
