Hi Guys

Getting my HPX next week, and i might go for this lense, XA17X7.6BERM anyone using this particular lense, if so whats your thoughts.
Thanks in advance.

I had one and sold it, I bought a SD wideangle. This lens isnt my favorite, it has nasty breathing, and edge-softness problems. The build is really solid though. Try picking up an SD fujinon lens 2nd hand. You wont be sorry you did!

Can you suggest type, and Im a bit confused with the breathing what does that mean, sorry for my lack of knowledge.
thanks

Lens Breathing in simple terms is when the lens appears to zoom slightly in and out when focusing. If you turn the focus dial and it looks like you are slightly zooming, that is Breathing. If you focus and everything stays the same, then the lens is not breathing. Higher end lenses will breathe much less or not at all.

Like Hunter said, If you are going to spend your money on a Lens, you'll be much better going with a used high quality SD lens, which will be far superior in many ways to the lower end HD lenses, and most likely cheaper.

Man you really know hoe to SELL it! :nads:

I'm just trying to help. The XA17x7.8 a great usable lens and I love the servo unit and handgrip controls, but as far as it being branded "HD" is just for marketing. You pay way more than the lens is worth because of the "CAC".

I really like wide angle lenses, one of the best SD wideangle lenses you can get is the Canon J11x4.5b. You can get one second hand for 8-10k with a 2x extender. Side by side, even though its "SD" it is more HD than the Fujinon CAC lens.

Maybe I should start a lens business...

Kit, your hired!

I"m 99.99% sure that Hunter was talking about the HD Lens when saying "This lens isnt my favorite, it has nasty breathing, and edge-softness problems" although the way he wrote it, it did sound like he was talking about the SD lens.

Look, the Lower end HD lenses look ok, are built decent enough, but they are cheap lenses compared to the High end SD lenses. Don't be fooled because it says "HD" on the lens that it is a superior lens. Glass is glass, most of it is going to look pretty decent. Go shoot something out of a window of your house, with the lens right up to the glass. Would most people be able to tell? I doubt it. But wait...It's not HD glass, what gives?

And think about it this way. Someone a couple of weeks ago in the main SD lens thread brought up a good point. Point and shoot digital cameras can shoot many times the resolution as the HPX, yet cost much less - do they have HD lenses on them? Again, I doubt it. Get some good SD glass for your camera and save a ton of money and forego the breathing. The only way that anybody except the most critical experts is going to tell the difference is by putting identical cameras, one with a HD lens and one with a SD lens, right next to each other, shooting the same exact thing and it being displayed on identical very expensive high resolution broadcast monitors. Then you "might" see a very slight difference. Realize that ALL of your customers will never know the difference in most applications.

Also think of it one more way. Most people that are into HD have seen some nice HD images on TV. You have to realize that TV is HD compressed into a 19Mb or lower HDV stream and it still looks great. An image with an SD lens on DVCPRO HD will look amazing. Just look at the top post in the forum - the SD HPX thread. Look at the images and video throughout, then tell me an SD lens isn't going to look great.

Thanks for your input guys, so are you saying dont bother with the XA17X7.6BERM lense.

Im getting it really cheap, like Australian $8000.00 which is USD$8888.

Is that a good reason just to have it, or would you still consider something else??

BTW im watching this lense Fujinon A14x9 BERM lens with 2x extender, its old/secondhand but would you consider this lense, If someone is using this particular lense some feed back would be nice.
cheers

Its a fine lens, it just breathes really bad. If you shoot film-style with a follow focus you will have issues. If you just shoot eng style, you probably wont even notice it.

I just dont think its worth the price.

Thanks Hunter for your advice.
Ive just noticed this lense on ebay, is this a good buy?

Fujinon A14x9 BERM lens with 2x extender

cheers

What do you mean by external focus...what you cant focus in the viewfinder??

Most new lenses have "internal focus", where the whole front of the lens / front glass does not move to focus. Older lenses, the whole front of the lens turns when you focus, hood, shade and all. If you had a Matte Box attached to it, the whole box would rotate.... THAT is external focus.

Thanks for that...

Talking about lenses just got aA14x9 BERM -28 today used for $420.00AUD.
Pegusas II...And my HVX502en, cant wait to use it.

Sure.

Be sure to post some footage and screen grabs under the top section of this forum "Has anyone tested SD Lens on the 500". The more the better.

To add another point to this discussion: I just purchased HPX-500-Set along with the FujinonHD-Lens. In the office I compared it with may 8-year-old-sd-Fujinon A15x8 for D9: The qualitiy was almost equal, the hd-lens a little bit less contrasty, but the coating was much better on the hd-lens than on my old sd-lens.
