x sign on my DVX100A LCD, what is it?

I was filming an event, and 1/2 hr into the event I got a red X on the left corner of the LCD screen as I was filming. I did not stop as this was a very important event and I couldn't, I was very nervous but, on my second tape and about 35 minutes into filming the red X when away by itself. I only had my DVX100A for a few months with 14hrs worth of recording...

What was that red X, and why did it go away by it self?

PS All of my tapes played back ok, Thank GOD... but I wouldn't want to face the red X sign if I can fix it.

Thanks

how many times do I have to post this??:

Thanks for your reply, the only question is... Why after 14hrs? I know the head is clean. The camera is kept in it's original box "like new"... is this just a warning that automatically comes up after 14hrs of use?

And if it really needs to be clean, how often should I do it? and what cleaning tapes are the best?

Thanks!

why did you post this is "Latest DVX News"??

You can try searching a thread about head cleaning.

What brand/type tapes have you been using?
Just my guess but I'd say after only 14 hours you've probably been mixing brands , Sony, Panasonic, TDK etc...
Just because you store the camera in the original box doesn't say anything about the shooting environments, dust, humidity????
Could be just bad luck. You may have run across one bad tape that has clogged the heads.
I would only reccommend the Panasonic cleaning tape and ONLY for 5 seconds at a time. It's a harsh tape to use and not really reccommended by most. Do a search here for head cleaning tips and you'll run across Barry's instructions for manually cleaning the heads, a delicate job.

I have only used Panasonic AY-DVM63MQ tapes, never mixed with other brand or models... So maybe was that particular tape that had the problem... Well, and regarding the cleaning tape, I bought a Sony, but I didn't want to use it because of the mixing of different brands not been good. I wasn't sure if that would matter when you use cleaning tapes as well.

So, what are my choices?

Thanks

PS sorry if I posted in the wrong place, I guess it would be move tomorrow.

1- Use the Sony tape (not my choice)
2 - Buy a Panasonic cleaning tape and try it.
3 - Attempt to clean the heads yourself using Barrys tips.
4 - Send it o an Authorized repair center and have it done right.

Does the repair place open up the camera? or do they just do a tape cleaning in a better way I would? I just don't want to send my camera anywhere if is not need it, and I can do it my self.

Thanks for all your help.

I had that issue in my first week of recording on the DVX. I was using a non-Panasonic type oif tape. Since I ran a cleaning tape and switched to MQ tapes, all has been fine. Try the cleaning method Barry suggests.

Thanks, I will.

It seems that brand new DVX heads still need some " running-in" or 'polishing' for a few hours. My DVX suffered a few dropouts within the first 20 hrs or so , but thankfully , none since. I feel certain , having read about this before , that the heads get smoothed over and reach 'equilibrium' with the type of tape used (all Panasonic PQs with me ). . . . - I'll just go check - yup - my 100A's heads now have 238hrs - fingers crossed !
