X-Men: First Class

As a child of the 70's I totally agree. Even supermarkets had ashtrays, and some people actually smoked while working...
Yeah, it's a superhero movie....but some of the guys in the war rooms WOULD have been smoking for sure. It's a small thing, but to give a feel of a period small things can be important. Like a western where the clothes are sqeaky clean....it's just off.
That's exactly the scene I was thinking of. That room would have been more filled with smoke than all Ridley and Tony Scott's movies from the 80's combined.

Well, to each their own...

Smoking just didn't seem to fit the tone of the movie. If that was a conscious director's choice, I support it, but I see what you guys mean about period accurate.

It's not just the smaller details like smoking, but the entire production and costume design. I feel like you could have easily placed that movie in the 90s and not changed any props, costumes, or sets, and no one would have known the difference. It didn't feel like the 70s to me.

This is a good point though. It didn't feel as though it were a different era. Agree with that.

Although it didn't bother me when watching it.

what bothered me is that some of the CG effects where mediocre I expected more ! Azazel disperse effect was not that great IMO compared to Nightcrawlers ( Xmen 2) ...ooh and that beach scene..meh but ofcourse u could argue Nightcrawler is newer in away :)

Still the best X-men I've seen !

Well and a review over at Box Office Mojo is saying that First Class is a "reboot" of the franchise.

This seems like misinformation. I've read nowhere that this is supposed to be a complete reboot of the franchise. I think they would have done a lot of things differently if it was.

No, it's a reboot. Always was.

Loved the first two acts. The third was like an entirely different movie. Almost like they just handed the reigns over to second unit and said "have fun!" Fassbender was awesome, and McAvoy did a really good job as well.

On a technical note, maybe it was just the film print, but those anamorphics were really soft. There were a lot of shots that almost looked out of focus they were so soft. I also noticed a lot of second unit shots that switched back to spherical lenses. They were probably a lot easier to lug around. And one slow-mo shot at the end (guys in the ship celebrating) looked like it was shot at 24 fps, slowed in post, and then interpolated--very weird looking motion.

If there is any big budget movie franchise that would work better as a tv show, this is it. So many characters, each with their own back stories, and the constant tension of them being outcast by humans. They could easily tone down the action (guaranteed with tv budgets) and make a fantastic dramatic tv show (maybe in the vein of Battlestar Galactica). Instead of making all these spinoffs and origins stories, I wish they would just bring it to the smaller screen and handle it all there, without all the plot holes and inconsistencies from one film to the next. And I know there was the cartoon, but I'm talking live action. Of course, it'll never happen.

A bit like "Heroes" or "Mutant X".

Pretty good movie, quiet enjoyed it.

<<<<<<SPOILERS>>>>>>

1. Some really great vfx. Particularly like Beast's initial foot transformation then the full blown werewolf vfx. Emma Frost's crystal form looked brilliant.

2. A lot of great reviews for Magneto but I thought McAvoy's Prof X was easily as good.

3. Didn't like Rose Byrne in this. Emma Frost (January Jones?) was ok but not strong.

4. A couple fantastic lines. The one about the tiger and pig farmer were great.

5. Nothing after the end credits :(

6. Really liked the Mystique/Prof X/Magneto/Beast dynamic (i hate that word). Really didn't like Mystique's choice at the end... Actually her motivation for it.

Did i miss the Stan Lee cameo, or did they CGI in a young Mr. Lee?

Good Flick, regardless though. Hope there is a lot of deleted scenes.

*possible spoiler*

How is it that Magneto cracks Emma's diamond form with a couple of old bed posts? Magnetism is a strong force, but surely it's strong enough to crack the hardest substance known to man.

I don't think he does it with magnetism. He's just able to control metal on a molecular level, and he's called Magneto, but that's it.
There are character in the Marvel universe that can control all types of molecules too, like Molecule Man.

I agree (mostly). The special effects aren't an issue anymore (the way they were with the Generation X tv film). I think the problem is that Xmen as a film franchise is too profitable and TV just can't match it. Heck, they can barely keep up their animated series like Xmen Evolution and Wolverine and the Xmen because of production costs vs profits.

Mutant X was actually a Marvel property that they developed so as to not infringe on the Xmen label -- and Mutant X didn't do so well.

Heroes was probably the best example of a big budget superhero show being able to survive its first season, but then Heroes sucked after its first season so...

Personally I think they should evolve and maintain an animated presence (which they did spectacularly for 4 season with X Evolution) of the Xmen to keep the franchise lively to new viewers, but a live action show, while I would consider a must watch (much like Birds of Prey which couldn't survive past 1 season despite all the hot chicks in leather outfits), I think it could seriously damage the franchise as a whole if they ever actually did it. Obviously Marvel/Disney feels the same way. Much like Birds of Prey I think the casual viewer will shrug their shoulders and the fans would complain about the differences between the comic and the show. It's a lose/lose, whereas in film it's a win/win -- because just like every superhero show, that first episode gets tons of views and then loses them all by the second episode.

Spiderman and Xmen work incredibly well in animation. I don't think live action is the answer; I think maybe a more adult-themed animated series would fill the niche just as well -- which is vaguely being addressed with Xmen: Anime which is about 10 episodes in right now. Unfortunately the writing leaves a lot to be desired...

The last four attempts (MTV's Spiderman: The Animated Series, Xmen: Evolution, Spectacular Spiderman, and Wolverine and The Xmen) have all been a huge leap forward for Marvel animation. With DC consistently putting out PG13 direct to DVD animated films (Wonder Woman and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker being the best of the bunch so far with Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse also of solid quality) I think we might start seeing something soon from the new Disney/Marvel partnership that could be pretty amazing. Maybe even something on the CGI front which is less expensive than traditional animation?

I don't need something to be live action for it to hold my interest. I love Xmen on the small screen, but animated, to me, suffices.

didnt liked it , too political and there wasnt a single likeable character ,just bunch of forgettable bored teenagers with pseudo problems.
Hey !!! ive got a problem i can morph into whoever i like !!! ITs a problem people , i could make millions of $ but i pretend that i have a problem and looking to get laid with drx or magneto.. ok seriously , this is so pathetic ,please ,its enough.
Am i alone on this superhero whining about acceptance bullsht ? This is so old and cliche.

I thought the movie was well done, though I agree with the third act being different from the first two (and not in a good way).

Xmen is specifically about prejudice and civil rights. In the end, that's the only thing that makes the Xmen worthwhile. Same as Spiderman is only worthwhile as a story because of Peter Parker's social akwardness. I don't know how many superhero movies have characters whining about acceptance, though. I can't think of who else you're referring to off the top of my head. I mean, movie Superman has a real issue because he can't have sex with anyone and literally lost his entire home planet. I think he can feel a little bummed about all that.

I think the reason it feels like *complaining* in the Xmen films is because the stakes have never really been high enough as it pertains to the civil rights issues. E.g. mutants are always fighting mutants in the films. In the comics they're being hunted and incinerated by giant robots and violently massacred by mutant hate groups. If Sentinels and real, violent threats from humans were present in the films, it would be able to maintain that holocaustic theme that they keep trying to engender in the films. Unfortunately in the films they only really have ever shown prejudice in the general sense but has then left it to the audience's *imagination* to decide how good or bad it actually is for mutants in the Xmen movie-verse. Instead of showing the holocaust over and over again, they should actually be making films *similar* to holocaust circumstances but for mutants. Until they do that, I'd agree with you. I've seen nothing so terrible to warrant them needing to be "Mutant and proud." I mean, I don't remember a single person with actual dialog ever saying that all mutants should hung from a tree and burned alive, or anything even close to the language used by hate groups during the civil rights movement.

In the end the comics are for adults and the movies are for tweens. I'd be suprised if they ever moved from that recipe.
