WWII Memorial-Take 2

Ok, this DOES work. (thanks, KS)

I'm not here to offend any of my international brothers with this. I am in the military, I love my country and I also think this monument is a wonderful tribute to those who fought and died in World War II. It sits in the heart of Washington DC between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument, "on the mall."

I didn't gamma correct for web/computer use, so some of the composite modes I used don't look as good on my computer screen here... too dark.

DVX stock 24P setting
No filters
First day with my steady cam
Music by the Air Force Band Singing Sergeants
Shot 0630 til about 0730

The more I try to do things other than capturing my TwoBoys antics the more I appreciate the pre-production work you guys do. As musician turned editor turned guy-with-cool-camera I need to start planning better with camera for edit.

Anyway:

Oh -- those of you following the Study in Steady Cam thread can see the whole movie here too... including the part where I run backwards full on into the swingset.

Footage looks real good. What service are you in? I'm currently in the Air Force and have nothing but respect for all our fallen heros.

Re: WWII Memorial-Take 2

I got goosebumps watching that! Especially when you started showing Tarawa, Guadacanal, Bataan, etc.......

Very nice choice of music and a nice collection of shots. Felt like a documentary. Loved it and it only reminds me of the sacrifices we have made as a country not only to the US but to the world. Sigh...........

Okay, sorry. Great job Captain! I would liked to have seen some POST work on this! Color Correction would have only served to support this. Also, the transitions were well thought out, but I feel the imagery BEHIND the words would serve better faded and saturated a bit. Too much detail took away from th written word! But no worries! Just my 2 cents.

I almost joined the Air Force but chose the US Coast Guard purely for the WATER. (Im a San Diego Native what do yo u expect!) :P

Re: WWII Memorial-Take 2

CaptM The Memorial video is great. I love it. It is unbelievable how many have suffered in order to keep our country safe. I think you did an awesome job with the video. The DVX does such an amazing job with the colors of the sky and the colors of the stone in which so many names are engraved. The detail is superb. The only thing I would change is when you are spinning one way following names and when you overlay video spinning the other way with names and you never completely go through with the dissolve. I don't know if it is because I have mono right now and my mind just gets confused easily or if it is because it really was dizzying. It made me feel dizzy. Otherwise keep up the great work and keep enjoying the FTP.

Re: WWII Memorial-Take 2

Thanks -- I got dizzy with the spinning thing too. I had this idea that it would work and kept trying to force it... not wanting to give up on that idea. In my work they call that Target Fixation! I think when I go 'final' on this I'll try some other options... maybe just staying on one and then cross to the other.

The monument is set up in two halves, an Atlantic and a Pacific side. The list of battles sit at the base of the two pillars. I guess I don't have to show ALL the names... people will get the idea.

Thanks again.

Re: WWII Memorial-Take 2

You heard things about what from SHAW? Im located at Shaw Air Force base. Im currently a Civil Engineering troup that is crosstraining into Videography. I also am working on loan with the Videographer on base here which also reads this board all the time.

Let us know what you heard from shaw!

Re: WWII Memorial-Take 2

RE: Shaw -- I was looking for someone to shoot some stuff for us here in DC and a source for possible B-roll. I got three AF places handed to me from a NUMBER of folks, including a few pentagon offices. Shaw, Hill and Vandenberg were the places to go for great camera work.

Sorry, I picked Vandenberg. However, they way you were all spoken about in the circles I was traveling was the stuff of legends. I'm sure they are still a great combat camera crew.

Another case of target fixation... Couldn't figure out how to get those words to pop. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a try.

Appreciated.

Re: WWII Memorial-Take 2

Hey CaptainMench,

Took a look at your video and thought you did a good job. I thought the spinning around the circle with the spinning the opposite direction was a cool effect. I live right by DC so I need to go over there and take a look at it! Thanks! :)

Re: WWII Memorial-Take 2

Hey Kyle!! Yeah -- hop on the subway and come on down!! Don't come this weekend though... big celebration for the opening. If you see the Airmen of Note on the stage on TV those are MY guys!!!

Anyway -- About that reverse direction spinning thing... I ended up having mixed feelings about it. Didn't really work the way I wanted it to. I didn't like when the words crossed and you couldn't see them anymore. (PPPPP) I re-did it with a few shots switched and also something VERY cool (I think) suggested above... the final pull-back from the Lincoln fades into some of the inscriptions -- I start the pull back and then as the words come up I desaturated the pull back and then color corrected (kind of) the stones to make them look the same.

It's not there right now, but will put it up again tonight. Cool pictures of it in the Post last Sunday.
