I thought it was shot very well and directed very well, but the sound could use some work. There wasn't enough. Especially in the first section with the battle going, it should have been louder. The actors didn't sound the slightest bit upset about being in a war*, and the war itself sounded distant. It didn't make me feel. That's important, especially in this kind of work; combat is frightening, loud, overpowing, disturbing, all sorts of emotions... emotions that should be given to the audience more effectively.

*I realize that many soldiers today don't sound the slightest bit upset while in war, but in this case they were yelling and using words like they were upset. They just didn't follow through with the emotion.

I agree. I shot, directed and edited the film....and also did the sound mix. The sound was 100% foley and ADR but it's not my area of expertise at all.

I think we also lacked a lot of extras :) Would have been nice to see 20 or 30 kiwis running around the hills. But it's a struggle to find authentic uniforms and guns.

Thanks for taking the time to write some feedback though!

I was wondering if it was ADR, while not perfect it actually sounded a lot more natural than most. In that case I can see extra difficulty in making their dialog sound right. Capturing on set makes life a lot easier.

Well - I actually did the 'El Mariachi' trick.

My Sony V1 has water damage and it doesn't record sound in HD mode but it works in SD mode.

So I shoot the scene in HD. Then switch the camera to SD, move in real close with the boom and get the actors to repeat their lines a couple of times.

It's a hack ADR job - but works when you don't have time to do it later!

I liked this a lot. Your jump from the farm to the battlefield was a bit rough, but you had the right idea. I think maybe a good trick, would be to kinda switch back and forth between things he did on a farm. Maybe he tricks some cows to go somewhere for something, and then tricks some germans, etc... that sorta thing.

The cleverness of the trick he uses is pretty cool. Also good work on selecting some good locations (where was all this shot?)

How much further do you intend to take the story?

The story is based on Clive Hulme - a kiwi sniper who during the battle for Crete killed 33 Germans by infiltrating their lines - amongst other tactics.

I shot the short film in and around Christchurch, New Zealand. Some of the hill side, from a distance, looks like Crete. It just has way too much grass up close though.

Will shoot a couple more shorts on other people involved in the battle in the new year. But the main idea is to shoot a feature in 2012/13 about the entire Crete battle.

good directing, great shots, keep up the good work and best of luck when you work on the feature :)
