WTB: HPX170 / Retailer Options

I am writing this thread in the hopes that I can get some feedback from this community.

I am a self-taught, still learning, student filmmaker on a tight budget. I've finally squared away some funds and would like to purchase an HPX170 as it is within my budget and has the features I am looking for a camera. Before the HPX, I considered a DSLR Rig (D90), but I still strongly feel that the HPX is a better long-term solution (can't really use the word investment as equipment will certainly depreciate over time).

My dilemma is thus: I have narrowed my purchasing options to two retailers--US 1 Camera and BH Photo.

I have never purchased from US 1, and they have very mixed reviews that are both good and bad, but I have purchased through BH. I have had quality-control issues with BH in the past, though they've corrected the issue in a timely fashion.

The price difference between the retailers is staggering---$1,000 ($3400-$4400) and I can't seem to think of why the gap is so much. I know that the first generation of HPX's had some quality control issues, and I almost wonder if thats what US 1 is selling, though I'm not sure how to be certain of this. I have also considered buying a used rig (I live in NorCALI by SF), but for what I've seen posted on this forum that's used, the cost factor almost makes it more worthwhile to buy new being that you know the history and treatment of the equipment without the risk of being exploited.

Long story short, I would appreciate any feedback from those who could advise me on equipment and retailer options. I've a budget a little over $5k, and have planned on purchasing the camera, a carrying case, and some P2 media.

Thanks!
Will

Looks like the classic scam of some New York camera online retailers where they pull all kinds of shady stuff...mainly selling gray market goods, vastly overpriced 3rd party products that they push on you, then if you refuse the hard sell they suddenly and mysteriously go out of stock on the camera. If you want a decent price from a reputable online retailer then B&H or Adorama are some of your best bets. At least if you have a problem with the order you will get real customer service and not a scam. I've never dealt with US1Camera but based on the reviews in the link above, I would assume that most, if not all, of the glowing reviews are "plants", and the negative reviews reflect the most likely experience you would have.

Will, keep an eye on this forum. Several used HPX170's have shown up for sale over the past month. I believe the 5 year warranty may be transferable. I have had my hpx170 since August and love it.

As stated above, it sounds like a scam company.

I cannot tell you enough how good of an idea it is to order from B&H. They're authorized, they have great prices, they ship lightning fast, and you really can't beat their 14 day return policy.

I was recently in your shoes (just graduated), and I can honestly understand where you're coming from with this purchase. Let's say four days after you receive your camera, something happens that requires you to have that money you have saved away. You can always return the camera and get a full refund, no matter what.

This other place you mentioned won't even come close to that. And you probably won't get your camera in the long-run and will waste your time.

B&H is the way to go.

Thanks for the feedback---I will keep my eyes peeled on the forum, though BH is likely the way I will go. Glad to hear others have been very pleased with this camera and the service they've received from BH--It will outcost every other camera I've purchased up to this point by about 5x. Thanks again for the responses; they are appreciated.
