You should try renting one first - it's cool to own, but by renting, you can try out different combinations - 100/a/b matte box/follow focus/cinetactics/fig rig etc. Try them all and by then you'll be ready to buy a nice used HVX200 setup the way you want. Rentals are super cheap nowadays, you can get a week for 100-250, and you can shoot a lot in a week. I am a big believer in owning, but I have become a fan of renting for the variety of choices you get. Make sure if you rent from an individual, you shoot test tape before you pay anything. Renting will also help you to meet others in the community and thats a great way to pick up practical experience. If you decide to be a DP and do just D/HVX stuff, ten buy one and quit school, but believe me, try these babies first. If you have done this, then you should be able to pick up a rig exactly the way you want for $2500.

you can get a used DVX100 for around $1600 on eBay and buy your own metal case for $36 on Amazon. For a 100A you're looking at $1900-2000 and for a 100B $2100-2400. If you don't care about echo in the audio monitoring, 16:9 squeeze mode or proper viewing of 16:9 in the EVF, then the basic 100 should be all you need.

Also make sure to get AMQ tapes (63min). I wouldn't use anything else. Get a Panasonic dry head cleaner tape before using them if other tapes (Sony, JVC, etc) were used before.

thanks for the responses guys.

my roommate actually owns a dvx100a. he got that with a pelican 1650, $1200 matte box, 3 batteries, manifrotto tripod, the dvx book, 3 titanium filters, and a buncha tapes for 2750. that was last year. so i figure something comprable to that can be found for much less. he's telling me i ought to get the HV20 but im still a little partial with the dvx. a couple of you have already sent me PMs with cams for sale.

is anyone down to throw in a full package with tripod and case? im trying to not have to mix and match from a bunch of different sources. ideally from a single private owner. i've already seen some pretty sweet deals with the dvx, case, batteries, tripod, and a couple other filters and accessories for under 2300 on craigslist and elsewhere but it was sold like a hot cake.

im still in the search, and i havent quite found what im looking for. but anyone with offers, please throw them my way. thanks!

well a Hv20 with a brevis is a killer set up, and I own a DVX100b, and i love it, but the hv20 is HDV, plus with the 24, and a few other manual setting, do the rest in post. Im considering doing that intead of going to the G1, plus you have the SDI port on the Hv20, unlike the a1. Anyways, you could get a pretty close setup up with keeping the prices about leval, you just need to know you NLE good, and your set, I immeadatly went to get a 35mm after filming some shorts with the DVX just because the "everything sharp" Probllum, But ihave decided to keep the DVX after failing to sell it for what i wanted. I'm not going to go to HD untill the whole Blu-ray and Hd-dvd, are done battling. The Dvx is a tank, and for right now, it is not hugly out of date, just because alot of people own a DVD player, but hardly anyone has a HD player, So Im not worried.

Actually that's HDMI....similar though....

The A1 has an analog output which I believe is equal to the HV20's HDMI when using an IntensityPro card. Is this not the case?

Also isn't getting the HV20 focused and centered on a Brevis a nightmare? How about also the "cell phone trick" needing to be done every time you start the thing up?

No way. That's an analog signal where the HDMI is totally digital. Not saying that analog out does not produce good looking pictures but it would not be as "clean."

Plus... there really is absolutely nothing wrong with using any kind of "trick" everytime when starting up your camera. It just ensures you have the proper settings in the proper environment. When you change shots or locations you "must' make sure you set the cam everytime anyways to get the best picture possible....so tome this is just helping me not to get a nasty suprise in post.
