Hi All,

I am a newbie and about to embark on the wonderful world of filming. I am looking for a good price on a DVX-100A package and a Tripod, and was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction.

Also, is it discouraged to buy a used set? I notice you only save about $200 when buying a used one.

Thank you. :)

I bought a used set, and quite happy with it. I see that alot of people want near "new" price for their gear, but I suspect the price that it actually sells at is a bit lower. Usually, you can get a package deal that makes buying used worth it. I see package deals with the DVX100a between $2800 and $3200 depending on how many hours on the heads, how much warranty is left, and what type of gear they are throwing in to sweeten up the deal.

Buying used can be a real deal, just make sure you are buying from a respected person, and clarify the warranty, hours, and where they purchased the camera. You don't wan't a gray market device.

It's true that the DVX100a doesn't lose value much, and resell for pretty close to the $3000 mark (give or take a few hundered dollars).

Good Luck

Thanks. Any suggestions for where to look for reputable re-sales?
I am hoping to spend mid-$2000s.

It will be very hard to get a package at that price, unless you will settle for the older DVX100.  If you are willing to take more risk you can try Ebay, but a few warnings about Ebay.  I stay away from the Ebay stores (too hard to tell if they are gray market, besides the prices aren't that great).  Those stores throw in alot of worthless lenses, cheap tripods to try and sweeten the deal, but don't be fooled.

If you buy from an individual, just make sure you ask them where they got it.  Then check with the Panasonic website to see if they are an authorized dealer (again you are trying to avoid a gray market camera).

I suppose a used Gray Market camera might not be a bad deal if it worked, and the price was about 50% cheaper than a US Brand, but those guys are trying to sell them for top doller, and it's not worth the risk, especially since the warranty is useless in the US.

Thanks again Mike. I guess I can be a bit flexible on the price, but just need to make sure that I am getting a decent deal for a used set. :)

I have looked around on eBay, but it just seems to be such a difficult environment - you have people offering DVX100s from $700 to $3000, who do you trust? :-/

Look at the feedback from others, see how long they have been members, ask them questions to see how they respond, do credit card only to cover yourself, and if something is fishy, just move on...

Good advice! - Play VERY safe and if in *any* doubt - Run away from the deal. It won't be the last one for sale.

Re: WTB - DVX 100A package w/Tripod

Having just received my eBay-purchased DVX today, I must say that it took a lot of time and patience to get one from someone reputable (a shooter in San Fran). Probably 50% of the ones that aren't from eBay stores are still scams. ALWAYS check a seller's feedback and see if he/she has sold similar things in the past. Not to say that they always sell electronics, but if someone has gone from selling baseball cards or collectible spoons to a $3000 camera, chances are their user ID has been cracked and a scammer is behind the deal.

Having said all that, Boo is selling what seems like a very nice package for a very good price (I wish I had waited to get it -- paid the same but got a little less; sorry, Boo!). No tripod, but a low-use camera with a good case and UV filter for a lot less than new. Just a thought. Getting a camera at a good deal on eBay is hard because of sniping.

For used cameras, the attached warranty is often expired. Is this a big problem? Is it possible/recommended to buy an extended warranty?

Thanks. :)

hi jae,

Re: WTB - DVX 100A package w/Tripod

I'm suprised too.  This is how I got my great gear.  Saved me $100's with all the accessories added to the deal.  I'm still thinking of sending the DVXUser that sold it to me a Christmas gift.   :D
