Hey guys, I just got my SGpro yeaterday and it finally hits me, Im really going to have to get a monitor. i'm shooting sd now but will be upgrading within the year to HD. I'm not looking to spend to much so let me know what you got!
I've got a pretty much brand new Ikan V-7000 7" on camera LCD monitor that I used for my RedRock M2 set-up. It was used for one production and is in perfect condition. Comes with all original accessories. I should be able to get some pictures up shortly. New it's $329.95 at B&H. I'll sell for $250 plus whatever actual shipping costs from my NYC location to you. Let me know.
I've heard the mixed reviews as well. There are better monitors - none of them cost this little. This monitor is by no means complete crap and worked just fine for me. It comes with lots of accessories, has flipping built into the montior for 35mm adapter use, and you can buy an optional battery power option so you can use your Sony, Canon, or Panasonic camera batteries to power it. Frankly, just the size difference of having a 7" monitor on camera compared to most cameras 2.5" displays helps so much with seeing the image and also with focus.
To gear it better for focus, I spent some time tweaking the brightness, contrast, & sharpness controls and that made it work much better than straight out of the box. I also found that pulling the color level all the way to 0 and thus making the image black and white also helped your eye to focus better on the edges of objects and thus better see focus.
Keep in mind critical focus really only becomes an issue when you're using a 35mm adapter. Hopefully in this situation you will also be using a Follow Focus (I'll also be selling one of those shortly as well). In this situation you should also have a 1st AC (your focus puller.) No experienced 1st AC pulls focus by looking at a monitor. They use measurements marked off on the floor and their own natural ability to follow a subject as they move in the room.
Finally we are selling this monitor because most of our work is in a studio environment and we are able to use 24" full 1920 X 1080 HD montiors. We only needed the better on camera monitor for this one job and I'd rather not just have it sitting around doing nothing when I can sell it and get some money back. I think at this price you'll be very happy with the IKAN. It has a lot of bang for the buck.
