Writing on the wall

Hey, I'm trying to recreate the look of a wall that has had words carved into it. Something similar to the scene in The Shawshank Redemption when Brooks carves "Brooks was here" in the cross beam where he hanged himself.

It needs to be noticeable from a fair distance away, about 30ft., but I can't think of anything aside from actually carving into the wall.

A concrete wall? Take a concrete wall and put up a layer of styrofoam over it. Paint/stain/distress the styrofoam to look like the other walls. Then carve your words into the styrofoam.

That's the only thing I can think of. Anybody else?

Also, to be more specific, the wall has this fake wood paneling on it, and I'm not going to be using this for a film/video. This is just something I want to do/put in the house I'm renting to pay tribute to the awesome movie mentioned above, which is why I can't actually carve into the cross beam. I was thinking something along the lines of some sort of decal or sticker. But is that feasible?
