Wow . . .

There was an article posted about this awhile back, but they didn't have speculations of prices or anything. 90 cents for 30 gigs?! Sounds like a sweet deal if you're backing up tons of info.

They've been talking about these for a while. 30gb is the *smallest* capacity I've heard mentioned yet... usually they're talking about 200gb or larger. So yes, this could be a quite convenient way to back up HVX footage from P2 cards... 30gb at 90 cents would be about 1/50 the cost of HDV tape, and while $1800 for the drive may sound pricey, it's half the cost of an HDV deck.

Toshiba just dumped a whole lot of cash into them, so hopefully they'll have the wherewithal to actually bring this product to market now.

Problem is, how big is that unit? Might be bigger than the camera.

Now, if they're smart, they'll allow it to be battery-operated and take firewire input -- then you could wear that thing in a backpack or something, and stream directly to it. You wouldn't need a P2 card at all at that point...

hehehe

Panasonic is in for a rude awakening if theres firewire input output on that drive...because the P2 cards are gonna bring more money to Panasonic when the HVX comes out...Jus something i concoqued from my marketing class...

This sign of storage development from Optware may be the endgame for P2

. . . unless Panasonic can compete with such contentions. This is obviously now a very competitive market, and if Optware releases enough publicity before HVX's release, this may send users in another direction: buy the HVX, get the Optware device for $2000 or so, and $10 worth of 300 GB holograms!! What is everyone's choice now, P2 or Optware??

Obviously timing is a factor, but next year . . .

That gives me visions of the old beta shoulder decks, I thought we were moving forward.

It does sound pretty amazing, but are they very reliable? Remember, the P2 cards can be torched and thrown in water and it will still be usuable. These cards look like they can be stepped on and then you lose 30 gigs worth of info in half a second.
