WOW! GF1 Manual Video Settings. Thanks Vitaliy and Crew.

OMG! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED TO MAKE THIS A REALITY!

To understand how happy this makes me, know that I never use all caps in the internet. I'll be making a donation this week.

Yet, do GH1 and GF1 share the same or a similar sensor? If so, why we cannot have good 1080p going with the GF1?

Sensor is different.
GF1 and G2 have same sensor.

GF1 have some mode (25fps) that looks to be close to FullHD (it is not generally used), but I am not completely reversed all path from interface mode setup to sensor setup.
Around of 70% work is done, but other 30% is tough.

Problem getting M to stick

Problem getting M to stick

I have loaded the settings suggested by MPGSVCD and it works but the M (icon-movie) will not stick. Switch camera off> back on> I need to go into movie menu and press mode-M (even though it says M mode). switch to one of the still modes (M) back to movie the movie icon plus P is selected, need to go back to movie menu and select M. (this is all using top dial)
Using the movie button it seems to work sometimes. Any one else?

It is known and documented behaviour (see help hint for latest PTool).

To make camera behave exactly as GH1 we need to change two large routines, adn we can't do it at this stage.
Current bahaviour is not very bad, sometimes it is even better (supposely you are at manual mode and see opportunity to start shooting short clip, you need to double click menu to go to manual movie mode. And your manual settings will be preserved, so shutter can be pressed right away.

Brilliant! I had a feeling this was going to happen and purchased a GF1 just last week for a great deal. Looking forward to doing some testing. Cheers Vitaliy and crew!

This latest hack to enable manual movie settings is a fundamental game changer for the GF1, and video shot with the proper 180-degree shutter speed (2x your FPS) looks better and more film-like than even the highest bit rate video shot with the stock shutter speed variability. If you had to squint to see the difference with the goosed bit rate hack, trust me, the difference with the proper shutter speed is immediately obvious and gratifying. Now there's no more need to use manual legacy glass to lock your shutter speed in video, though of course there are other reasons to use old lenses which have nothing to do with SS.

I sent another donation to Vitaliy via the link at the head of the original hack thread. Never mind doing the right thing -- this new hack saved me a lot of money I had already earmarked to buy a few more FD lenses for video work. Now I can use the 20mm pancake and get the same 180-degree SS. Didn't think it would ever be possible. Thank you Vitaliy, amazing work you're doing.

There is one way to get the manual video mode to stick. You can just save a C2 setting as a manual video mode setting. However, there is a BIG CAUTION for this. If you save a custom video setting in manual video mode you will not be able to shoot pictures in that mode.

The only way you can revert it back to both pictures and movie mode is to copy one of the other unmodified modes over it. WARNING: If you set all 4 of the custom modes to movie only mode then you may not be able to revert them back to picture plus movie mode.

I setup my C2-3 mode with manual shutter speed priority video mode. That gives me a quick option to shoot videos with any aperture, shutter speed, and ISO that I see fit.

If you save a custom video setting in manual video mode you will not be able to shoot pictures in that mode.

could you give us a very quick written tutorial, just a sentence or two, the wording has lost me a little. does this mean you can always have S mode as video and the rest as normal, including both customs set to not video?

thanks

Been playing with this all morning and it works beautifully! Made my donation and I hope that everyone who has been waiting for this hack does the same.

Been shooting on /130 and 1/60. Both seem to look the exact same to me. I haven't been able to get rid of as much panning strobe as I had been hoping to, but that is just a limitation of dslrs I assume.

There are two settings on your camera. One is labled C1 the other is C2. They allow you to save up to 4 different groups of custom settings at a time.

If you switch to one of those custom modes, enable the manual video mode, and then save that mode it will always revert to manual video mode when you select that mode in the future. This happens even if you change modes or turn the camera off and on again.

The issue is that you loose the ability to take stills in that particular custom mode and you can't get it off of manual video mode unless you copy another mode to it.

Does that clarify what happens?

1/30 and 1/60 are going to look very similar for 30 FPS video. Try 1/125, that is great for eliminating the strobing affects from lights in 60 HZ countries.

If you really want to see the difference try 1/2000 or faster with a moving subject. It looks weird but sometimes produces a cool "300" affect.

Actually, it sounds like the Custom modes will work the way I would prefer. That is, you switch to movie mode, configure a manual video setup to your liking, and then save that setup to one of the Custom slots. The camera will then switch to that video setup anytime you select that Custom slot. This also solves the minor hiccup of the manual mode patch reverting back to Program exposure in movie mode.

On my GF1, I use Custom 1 for taking point-and-shoot snapshots. I have the three Custom 2 slots programmed with various video setups. I disabled the separate video button, and use the shutter button to take videos in video mode, and stills in snapshot mode. (That makes using a remote shutter switch practical for taking videos.) Thus, I wouldn't expect to take snapshots in any of the Custom video setups.

Yup, then setting the custom modes to video only will work perfectly for you. I have my C2-3 setup for shutter priority because I find that mode to be the most user friendly.

mpgxsvcd, do you know if switching to PAL 25p even if i am in the USA is going to cause some problems with workflow? I want to get 24p but it seems 25p is the closest thing to it.

Thanks

This is just too awesome!! I just noticed that there's a new FHD setting for the GF1... Does the FHD work for the GF1? What is the difference? I tried and it gave me a jittery video while recording (it looks like a vhs tape gone wrong), even the playback file once played on my pc, Otherwise, Many many thanks! Cheers!

Yes...Vitaly stated in another thread that it is not optimised as yet and was thrown in there just for fun (including jittery video).

MPGXSVCD- are you still sticking to the settings you gave out as seta.ini? Works fine just wondering if you would change anything?
C2-3 setup works like a dream, nice to be able to do a test still, look at histogram then click to video and have settings transfer
