So im goin to be ordering my camera (hmc40) sometime soon. I need some sugestions About editing. Im goin to be ordering the camera from B&H photovideo. They have a deal right now for there $2000 package on the camera if you order it be for a certin date. They give you some kind of editing sofware with it . I have a windows hp desktop. Nothin that grate but it does work good and its fast theres not that much stuff on it. Do you think this would be a good enough computer to edit with???? And how would i even edit everything?? I dont realy understand the comvertin everything.....

What processor do you have in your desktop?

Computers with powerful processors, like the quad-core i7 series, can edit the raw AVCHD footage that the HC40 produces. Directly editing AVCHD on a less powerful computer will be sluggish and perhaps not even possible ..... however those less powerful computers can still edit other kinds of HD video. So in that situation your first step is to use software to convert your hard-to-edit AVCHD into easy-to-edit avi or mov. And then you do all your editing on those converted files.

Edit: I should clarify that this depends in part on the NLE you are using - my comments and experience are in the context of Premiere. From the comments below, you'll see that Edius requires less hardware grunt!

Actually my new HMC40 that came Friday (whoot) had Edius 2.5 Booster in the box. Edius 2.5 Booster can edit native AVCHD In RT with a core 2 duo or better.

Congrats on the new 40 ATL! Fun, isn't it? :2vrolijk_08:

Edius Neo w/booster does indeed handle native AVCHD astonishingly well. I'm using a low end quad, and it runs quite nicely on that. They really should add that booster thingy to Edius 5 too.

Thanks... Ya.. VERY nice cam. (editing to add) The 40 is actually amazing. I got it for it's great image and light weight to use on a steadycam merlin which it excels at btw. It's so light I can use it on the merlin for long periods of time with no fatigue! The more I use the little 40 the more I like it. It's got enough options in the menus to make customization feel more professional, yet it's so easy to just pick up and shoot it's a joy. I find myself picking up the little guy at every opportunity. I'm actually surprised at the quality of the low light ability. With some tweaking you can get decent low light performance from the 40. WTG Panasonic.

Ordering the NX5 with 128gb flash also soon so I'll let you know how they work together when I get it.

BTW... Word is there will be an Edius 5.5 with Booster and some other updates coming soon.

I really like the weight and the feel of the 40. Some folks might think it feels cheap, but I think it's almost ideal. The HMC40 is just incredibly comfortable to shoot with, compared to a bigger cam like an XH-A1 or whatever, and it's not quite too light either - just right. I do think that the HMC40 and NX5U could make a very good pair. The NX5U, at least in theory, looks like it should shoot a pretty similar image in terms of detail.

Thanks everyone. Ya i ordered my hmc40 today it shoyld be in within a couple days. I cant wait. I dont think the computer i have right now will handle editing so ill need to invest in a new computer. Any ideas about what would be a computer to get.
