FS7: Would You Buy A Panasonic AU-EVA1?

Fair play.. but there are other ways to roll. (I roll like this too mostly)

I really dream of SMM aged 28, skipping up Kilmanjaro with an FM2 and 10rolls of Kodachrome - no batteries required.

I love my EVFs! I'm sure people will make loupes and other rigs little EVA once she hits the streets.

The cable has to be long enough for a thrd party looupe to work - the FS7 is about 3inches short - the most major design flaw that is simple to rectify.

Sure one can buy a Zacuto golf ball and power it externally and indulge in firmware hell.

It's the camera I hoped it will be. On paper that is. Right now I use the fs7 "box" with a zacuto evf shoulder mount and battery system I don't even use the Sony handle so for me it's all about the answer to the question: will I get better skin tones out of the new box with all the tech specs it offers and is the camera easily operable firmware wise if the answer is yes then for a couple thousands of dollars I get the box replaced. But that won't happen before January or Feb. next year.

I'm not interested in anything Panasonic branded as I got a bit burned on their AF100. As I recall working with the AF100 involved a lot of tweaking trying to get the best out of it and I never want to go that route ever again. Something I've never done with any Sony or Canon camera. They just looked right from the beginning. So to me Panasonic is a no no.

EVA1 will be just an oddball like the AF100.

In this incarnation no...if between now and anytime in the next year Panny releases a M4/3 mount and I haven't bought another cam in the meantime (a lot of ifs!!) yes...I would give it a serious look!

I thought it sounded great until I heard EF-mount only. I think it'll be a very nice fit for a lit of people, particularly events types where the dual-ISO will be a godsend.

It wouldn't fit the bill for my stuff though.

Agreed...but hardly fits the Cinema camera bill for me with the EF mount...

Is that XLR really sticking out of the back of the camera ..YES it is !.. looks like no way to use V mount .. no EVF.. .. small battery/screen only hipster cam.. best used on a state board .. groan..

Jesus ..now many more of these identical toy cameras are going to be produced..

You can have a camera that is large, heavy, power hungry and expensive. Or you can have a camera that is more minimal and then add the parts that you want. Different people want different things so why should they forced upon everyone? Everything you mention can be added to the camera. We are working closely with third party manufacturers.

Mitch, I know a lot of people like 3rd party EVF's, but i find them a compromise usually because they use up a precious camera SDI that might be needed elsewhere ( i often need 2) and rarely carry all the camera's screen info . That's why I prefer to always have at least a simple EVF loupe available.
Your video is correct that the rear EVF screens as on EX-1, or F3 are rarely used, but that's not so for the Loupe's that go over EVF's on say an FS7 or even an EX-3. How expensive or cumbersome can it be to not make one available? If you have a third party design one so that it works well and is sharp enough for focusing then fine, but it seem an odd thing leave to 3rd party and the chance it won't be available. its a big potential deal killer.

I guess the other question i would like to know is will it be possible to white balance within the Log mode on this camera (as in Alexa or RED rather than Sony method with 3 presets.)

The EVA1 has a lot of great features on paper - we'll have to wait until its released to see actual performance. The biggest design flaw is the EF mount IMO. That really limits the lens choices. If they'd gone for something like the Sony FZ mount which sits back at the sensor plane and can be adapted to just about any lens I think that would have been smarter. Still a lot of R&D in something like that, so I understand the choice and plenty of shooters will love it if it delivers on the promise.

To go with an EF mount is politically correct as so many others are doing it it's safe and no one can complain. It would be impossible to put a Sony mount in a Panny camera today.

E-mount is awesome but it will only be on Sony cameras this year at least. But E-mount will be just as common as EF-mount in a years time or so as it's the better one.

I just find that mount odd.

Its a stills mount..

Not designed for rotational torque of a focus motor
deep FFD to ensure that elements are way off the sensor adding cost and mass to lenses
Native canon lenses are far from stellar for video

It seems shortsighted to choose it just because most of your market started with a 5d2 and bought a couple of these lenses as they were an adequate option in 2008.

Also AFAIK MFT is an open standard with no licenses and has space for S35?

Not to mention that it dumps on GH4 upgraders

Hey Mitch, I likely missed the details with all the hoopla-
Will Panasonic enable some type of touch screen autofocus? If so your new camera clearly outspecs the C200, C300 Mk2, FS5, FS7, FS7M2, BM Ursa Pro. When I force myself to use the DPAF + face detect + tracking on the C300 Mk2 it is astonishing how well it works- and how necessary it is for a camera in this price bracket cause a competent first ac has been eliminated on productions that would use this camera.

Can auto focus do pull focus now.. telepathically from the DP,s mind.. that really is amazing .. I will buy this camera ASAP..

Canon's autofocus can accurately keep an actor's face in focus in 4K on a 200mm lens as they are walking or jogging towards the camera. Can you pull your own focus lens wide open and operate a camera and get it 100% of the time in daylight?

There are caveats of course and this is emerging technology. This doesn't replace a talented 1st ac but it is a viable option with small crews and 4K acquisition with some, but not all shots.

But by all means keep pulling your own focus in 4K. it helps the rest of us.

I've used Canons autofocus on a 1DXii with a 70-200 (my buddy's gear, he was trying to show me how 'good' the autofocus was, and I'm very skeptical).

Anyway - He went to one end of the studio and walked very quickly towards me (lens at 200) -> it didn't lose his face until he passed minimum focus distance. Unreal. Seriously considering picking up a 1DXii just for weddings to make life easier than using my FS7 (which I got for corporate).

One guy I know who is looking at new cams (wedding shooter) has an issue with it being 'panasonic' and that hideous red crap all over it -> "Thats like the photographers showing up and shooting with an Olympus!" haha Not that it *should* matter.. but apparently it does. We'll see how it actually performs!

I don't see it replacing my FS7 for a lot of work -> EX: post-game NHL interviews on ice / lockerooms and the FS7 form factor made that possible without having to rent another cam/rigging it out etc. Couldn't do that with the EVA1 (again.. without some rigging monstrosity) ... but I also shoot 40-50 weddings a year... and something smaller for those would definitely be something to consider!

Wasn't there a camera using a Micro Four Thirds mount with a Super 35 sensor? I believe it was one of JVC's. So JVC is using Panasonic's M4/3 mount but Panasonic uses Canon EF mount ?

Yeah JVC made that odd decision and for what it is it looks like one way to go. Then again E-mount is made to work with full frame and has the shortest flange of them all.

I have the to say I am interested in the potentially better colors from Panasonic. But I am def. going to wait a good while to see how well everything is working before making any decisions I was an early adopter of the fs7 and I could have done without the 6 months of firmware upgrades till it finally well enough. Also I would miss the the flexibility offered by the e-mount. And besides all my clients are happy and I seem to be the only one who sees things- so they better bring out a camera that is prime time ready.
