Would HPX171 and HVX201 footage match?

Hi

I have an HPX171 (you probably guessed that from my name) - but I'm looking for a second camera to go with this and I've been offered a very low use HVX201.

I can get this for more than £1000 less than the cheapest HPX I have seen - so a saving not to be sniffed at.

My question is - would the footage from the two cameras match easily with colours etc.

Would I be better digging deeper and finding another £1000 for another HPX171?

Advice pointers etc. greatfully received

Absolutely they match well. Very much the same camera. I have done several shoots with both these cams and they'll match well. Set you scene files the same.

Setting them to the exact same settings will not guarantee a match. With the HVX201A and the HPX171, yes, they'll match pretty well with the same settings, but even then, not identical.

However, with the original HVX201, it's not quite the same. You will have to do some tweaking to get them to match up; the imagers are different and they render color somewhat differently. It can be done, you just have to spend some time in front of a monitor doing A/B switching and tweaking.

Thanks Barry.

With an HPX and HVX201 then - using the same settings in the scene file - would the remaining difference be something that I could adjust in post?

Some things can be adjusted in post to make them pretty "seamless." However, in my personal use with these cameras I have found that the HPX has MUCH better low light performance than the HVX, and overall the HPX has lower noise than the HVX. As long as you're using them in well lit areas, they will look (pretty much) the same. However, in low light you will have some issues. Best of luck!

Thanks. I would be using in controlled lighting - interviews etc.

I don't think you'll have any problems with well lit, controlled lighting situations. I worked for a company call Fuel Industries (based out of Ottawa, Canada) for a little while (I was in the LA office) and they shot all of their video on an HPX and HVX (they had one of each). They also shared their cameras with Leslie Iwerks (Recycled Life and The Pixar Story), who from what I understand shot all of her stuff on those cameras.
