worth the upgrade

hello everyone,

im looking into buying an hmc tonight and right now i have a canon HF100 and i mean it shoots decent HD and everything. would it be worth the upgrade to the HMC40? what are your thoughts on it? please get back me!!!

First let me say that I own the HMC40, which now makes me less than 100% objective. (People who own the product tend to see all the positive aspects of the product and think of their camera as the best ever... :D)

The camera is amazing, it shoots beautiful images, is very flexible, has GREAT features, reasonable price, shoots very sharp images, and has a boat load of user controls.

In using the camera, I've found that it takes great video:

Like any tool, there are limits:

(1) The camera does not do well in very low level lighting. You can still shoot things at night in well lit areas, but when the light is next to nothing, the camera does poorly.

(2) It has a CMOS image sensor which could present problems when there are flashes going off. You'll see a bright band where the flash fired. There is also the issue of whip pans causing vertical lines to lean to the side.

Is it worth the upgrade? That depends on one's perspective.

The switch from tape to solid state is worth it to me, but some may not want to switch.

The ability to do pre-record AND the time lapse function is worth it to me, but for some, that may not be a big deal.

The flexibility and controls on the camera, including the waveform monitor were VERY important to me, but maybe someone won't find that important.

I can say I'm really happy with the camera, but for others, I'd have to ask what features or items are important to you?

Upgrade for the sake of upgrade is not a good reason, but upgrade because you see something to gain, IS a good reason.

I hope that helps,
