Worth it without P2 Cards?

I was at Costco today and noticed a self-powered, portable hard drive (Western Digital "Passport"). It was incredibly small and lightweight, fitting into the palm of one's hand. It offers 80GB of storage for about $150.

By contrast, 80GB worth of P2 storage would cost about $42,000.

While I don't expect this particular hard drive to work with the HVX (it was USB 2.0, too slow for video), I don't understand why Panasonic can't create something like this for the camera.

What am I missing?

Someone has tp pay for R&D cost.

The next generation of cards will be the 16GB cards (4 - 4GB SD cards).

(I know this is posted in numerous threads but here goes again...)
Currently with the 8GB that will be shipping with the camera you get:
DVCProHD (1080/60i) 8 min per card
DVCProHD (720/24P) 20 min per card
DVCPro50 (Audio 4ch) 16 min per card

based on those numbers you would assume that a 16GB card would be twice those times.
WOW P2 cards, despite everything good about them, are very expensive. I was hoping that one card per HVX will suffice for one session (half an hour)...

Maybe I should think about a very very long firewire cable? :)

Actually, firewire cable is expensive and limited in the distances you can run. But the new Bogen FigRig (http://services.manfrotto.com/figrig/) seems to have attachment points for all kinds of stuff... so it may be better to strap your G5 onto the Figrig, and just run a long power cord.
