Worst problem ever!

So I've been editing a movie in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 for about two weeks now. A drunken friend of mine comes over and knocks over the external harddrive onto the floor, unplugging it and everything. It now makes the most sickly sound anything that uses electricity has ever made from within itself. The disc knocks into the wall when it spins.

I took it to the comp shop. Here are their suggestions: Plan A.) They mentioned a place that once charged a guy 2G's to restore 4Gigs of files. I had a TB, no way. Plan B.) My drive is under Warranty and I can get a new one. Our DPs still have their footage. the same files that I edited with, I could just get the files from them and drag and drop them into APPCS4, but I don't have the APP editing file, it was on the drive.

But for some strange reason, I have hope. Is there SOME WAY that MAYBE I could find and access my editing file somewhere on the actual computer? Is there a secret folder in APP that autosaves elsewhere (Because I was autosaving to the drive to). Is there a magician out there that can help me to recover where APP might put a spare copy? Even if it's dated, anything is better than nothing. Thanx.

Look in your Documents folder for Adobe>PremierePro> 4.0 there should be an "Adobe Premiere Pro Auto-Save" folder... Look around in that dir.

Get ready to recapture everything and start from new, you changed everything to that drive, bad idea, even if I have one computer drive, and a EXT, i always have saves and autosaves on different ones.... so if i lose one... I have the other

Now I know. But I won't have to recapture the footage, the DP's have it.

If I were you, I would protect my assets a little better. I have my client footage on my NLE, my server, and locked up in my safe. Project folders get backed up daily to the server and a dedicated flash drive. It take me maybe an hour a week to admin this.

You better come up with a good story when you tell your clients you've lost all your project files and have to start this movie from scratch.

I've also kept my previous NLE system in running shape (less storage & slower CPU, but same software base). It's the fastest way to get back up & running, not the right time to go on a panic buy of parts and suffer driver issues and crashes.

Yikes. That sounds ugly. If the drive is unreadable and rubbing against the enclosure that might be outside the realm of what I'm going to suggest, but it might be worth to do the free test.

check out Data Rescue from www.prosofteng.com I lost an entire drive after accidentally reformatting (different than your situation). It was 4 years of my family video since my kids were born....and I thought I had backed it up to my raid. I did not. A movie I could handle missing, but every image from my kids....that made me sicker than I can express...but I digress.

Download their free software. It will only let you test the drive to see if info is there that is recoverable. THen if it finds something it only lets you open one little file, as "proof" of concept. Then you pay the hundred bucks to download the serial number to run the full version of the software.

I had to run the software a couple of times, but I eventually found everything.

All names, if you find anything, will be missing and some files might be broken into frames... but if that works for you give it a try.

I'd also kick the shi* out of your friend. You can always find new ones ...friends that is :)

When/IF you plug the hard dr9ive into the computer, does it actually work? as in it comes up under My Computer.

Have you taken a look inside? the hard drive might just be loose but inside there is a normal internal hard drive, unplug it and plug that into your pc, see if you can access it like that. The scraping is most probably a fan somewhere eating a wire, most probably it's own wire.

Are there any cracks on the controller board on the hard drive? if so look for the manufacturer and serial number and order a new one for about £10 and try again.

The drive is not recognize by ANY computer.

I was advised that by looking into the drive, opening it up or anything, would void the warranty. There are no cracks. it fell onto a carpet.

Yes it would void the warranty,

How long have you had the hard drive, if it's still in warranty the manufacturer might recover the data, just forget to mention knocking it onto the floor ;).

I would recommend not turning it on again till it gets looked at
by a professional.

I had the exact same issue (knocked over the drive), turned it on,
heard "scratching" sounds from inside. Tried it twice more on
different computers. Nothing worked. I then brought it in and was
told that the act of turning it on multiple times made the data
irretrievable. Even once can be the difference between a $200
repair and a $2,000 repair.

Since then, I dropped another hard drive while on location (I'm
clumsy I know) and took it straight to a local data recovery place.
They managed to access the data and copy all the files to a new
hard drive. No loss of data. Total cost $200 + a new drive.

I wouldn't be so concerned about the warranty. You dropped the
drive, warranty voided, end of story. The manufacturer will never
(in my experience) help you retrieve the data anyway. They'll just
send you a new one.
