Just look at that film-like motion feel on the 720 clip. I like it!
That's one small step for man... one giant leap for Indy filmmakers.

The thing is I could probably afford the camera alone but the p2 cards and the new editing system Is a nother story.

Both clips show 1280x720 and 60FPS? I'm still not crazy about H264 compression either. Although the first clip looks better compressed than the second one.

I think the 1080 clip looks great, especially the first shot with the guy shooting pool. Great camera work too.

man, no one likes the 1080 clip besides a few of us here. i think it looks good. i think people are mistaking the opening shot of the 1080 clip for crap because of how much smoke is diffusing the light. it looks great if you just get passed the smoke part.

Any chance we could get a DIVX HD for us poor users who don't have 3ghz+ systems. Their codec is infinitely better compressed in my opinion. Or WMV HD. Quicktime HD, is in my mind rediculous, I have a 2.2 Ghz system with a gig of RAM, and their movies always lag even at 720p.

Not to be annoying, but I'm sitting in front of a 1.79Ghz Athlon 3000+ computer right now, and it plays both clips back just fine. There are some visible compression artifacts from the H.264, but they play back smoothly.

Dont despair No Cash

the mother of invention is in your ability to be ingenious because of necessity.
...record the HVX to a laptop, or rent a P2 card and download it to a firewireHD after each shot. There are a variety of ways to work with the camera...

I am gonna do something Like this, for editing I will be jumping with my hard drives between 2-3 setups (friends & places i work etc)...

Oh, I think the 1080 clip looks great, it's the interaction of the talent that looks hokey. The DOF is a little wacky in the 1080 clip, but other than that it looks great. One could do a LOT with this camera!!!

i m waiting for this cam for 1 year, i hope the next footages will be better than that ..... my z1 footages are better. waiting for cinegamma stuffs

I was looking at the Sony HDV footage from the Sony site.
This HVX footage blows it away - no comparision. It beats that Sony demo footage hands down. Panasonic needs to take these clips and do a WMV HD encode so people can compare the two competing formats.

Just two days ago I bought a Sony DSR-11 deck and a Sony PVM-9L1. I'm just now getting my SD editing system set up.

And I've only made one short film on my DVX so far and that was my student film.

AMD processors do run more smoothly than pentiums when it comes to media playback and game play. it also depends on the amount of ram you have. i have a 2.25ghz P4 with 512mbs of ram, so all in all it's jerky, but the images still look good.

There's something wrong with the compression. It's not displaying the full res, and it's a 1280x720 frame.

Hm... Yup - the 1080 clip appears to have been scaled to 1280x720, and rather poorly... leading to the lines. This file is 60p and the cadence between the frames isn't even. I think it was shot 1080p24 (2:3?) and the pull-down wasn't removed prior to scaling. Nothing in the bar clip/sequence appeals to me... Be it the set or the lighting. The interlace artifacts detract from the presentation as well.

The 720p clip has been upsampled to 1280x720. The clip itself is actually 60p with repeated frames in a 2:3 arrangement... That is to say that the pull-down has not been removed. Given the source material one might expect to see some noise or artifacting but the H.264 compression probably gets rid of a lot of that if it was there.

The only thing these clips make particularly clear to me is that there are workflow issues in terms of getting this stuff to the web.

Question: If the camera only records the required 24 frames per second to P2 in 720p mode - why is the file 60P? Was this introduced by the editing program? If so, was it possible to do frame-accurate edits, or was cutting done in a 60P timeline?

Oh. Yeah I could see it being a little jerky with 512MB of ram.

I guess they had the inherent smoke problem of trying to get it consistent with each shot.

You guys are more than welcome to email me off-list and I'll see if I can help rid your H.264 of jitters. I'm not an expert or anything, but after a shitload of trial and error on this PC I finally got it to play nicely.
