Is it possible, or is this an image format Panasonic just made up to mess with people? Panasonic tech support just suggested I try iMovie...

I have to assume we're talking about the latest or near latest version of Photoshop, right?

Yes, you'll need to update Camera Raw
Normally your software has to be a couple of months newer than the camera release. So for the Panasonic GH5 you would want software that was updated/released around April 2017 or newer.

Why wouldn't Panasonic give users some way to convert these files to TIFF or at least a raw format that's more universally accessible? I'm stuck with CS6, so I'm not sure I even have a way to use these image files.

In that case you should be able to download and use Adobe DNG Converter to convert the files to compatible DNGs

Irfanview 64 will open RW2 files and it's free. Affinity photo also opens them and is not that exspensive.

Thanks, but Adobe DNG Converter doesn't work on either of my Macs. I can however open RW2 with Preview and save as TIFF's, so that's something.
I would find some low cost consumer Mac software that can open the RAW files. There must be a Mac app that can do this.
There are a bunch of open sourced tools that can work with these files, Darktable is one of them and there are several people on the OSX team. it is FREE and should have easy installers for OSX, I know the Windows versions is easy to install. Try it, I bet you like it over Lightroom. There are many others out there.
