Working on the same project on PC and laptop

Hi All!

Does anyone know a way I can work with the same project on my laptop when I'm travelling, and simply synchronize the changes when I'm back home?

My media files are kinda huge, and my laptop doesn't have that kind of space :-( Not after all the programs I've installed

Will appreciate any help....

Put the media on an external firewire drive, then copy the project folder back and forth.

Avid will handle the relinking between different sets of media automatically.

Let me know if you need more specifics.

Hmmmmmmmm...

I was thinking of doing some editing on the plane ride... Any way to have the files.... i don't know, compressed or transcoded..... and then link the project files to those instead? I'd like them to sit on my laptop's hard drive.....

You can transcode the footage to 15:1 offline resolution. You'll have to try it and see if your laptop is powerful enough. 15:1 actually takes more processing power than DV. Also laptop internal hard drives are usually 5400 RPM, which can severly impact performance with footage. I have a Powerbook G4 1.67 Ghz processor with 1.5 GB of RAM and I could not edit from the internal drive. Maybe you'll have better luck.

EDIT: 15:1 would be the offline resolution for a 30i project. If this is 24p then it would be 28:1, but everything else in my post still applies. :)

I only tried DV footage on my internal PB drive. If I was doing a single stream and cuts only, then I could get by. If I tried multiple streams, or if I stated adding effects (CC or whatnot) then I'd start getting system underrun and overrun errors. I'm not sure what 15:1 would be like.

By contrast on an external firewire 800 hard drive, I work in DV res and the PB has handled every thing I've throw at it. Also, just to test the limits of what I could do I set up a test timeline and could get 9 streams of DV out of that setup.

Oh ok.... well, I'm planning on editing a single stream only.... a rough cut, if you will.... don't think I'll be putting in effects, or playing with more than one stream... I just feel like the flying time can be put to good use, and I'm seriously hoping my laptop can handle it :-)

SO from your suggestion, I'm going to copy the media files and project files to my laptop and then relink those files.... and edit them. And once I get back I'll copy the project files over again, and relink them. This is correct?

That's pretty much it. Make a backup of your project folder for those "just in case, didn't expect that to happen" moments.

Any idea why the 24p footage I've captured seems to be interlaced? During capture, there were only 2 resolutions: DV25p 411OMF and 28:1. I thought that there would be something like... DV24p.... Is this the reason why my footage is interlaced?

No, the interlace problem is due to a pulldown cadence miscapture. DV25 is the resolution since it using the DV25 format directly from the camera. The frame rate is 24fps which has nothing to do with the codec format.

As far as interlace problems, did you shoot NORMAL cadence or ADVANCED? How were these captured? What version of software? etc. Only versions 5.1 and later can capture NORMAL pulldown over FireWire.
