Here's a picture of my deminsions of the cradle. The 2.5" in between the two mounting places is great because the pole it's self is 2-3/8" so if you decide to get 2.5" in between you have just enough room to add one washer on each side of the pole, and then mount the cradle! And I also used 1/16" steel for my cradle.

Thanks for kind comments...

One thing you may need to look at is how close the back of the camera is to the post, when you boom up. I actually mounted the camera (hmc) a little off center so it can boom all the way up without the post hitting the camera.

Also 5" high? I suppose you have a little camera :) so it may all work find for you. I have 12" of clearance for the camera. I am still working on this guy, only got a belt so far... need the electronics!

Yeahh I made that for my canon rebel t1i,and my sony hdr,and its working great,I forgot to put up the other ones thanks for reminding me,My other deminisions had a 10" clearance and they seemed to work really good, and for your new crandle you could use a screwdriver motor off a cheaper screwdriver, there pretty easy to find gears for too I used one on this cable cam below! And it's still going strong!

Update on my jib!

Update on my jib!

Finally getting to PAINT! Just got the main jib pole primed but I am going to finish it tommorow if everything goes well. I have also made my jib adjustable from an 8 ft. main pole and it can down-size or up-size 2 ft. or 3 ft.
Comments Welcome!

That is one slick looking tool you got there. It looks really sturdy and professional. I'm working on a jib myself but since it's my first time building one I've made it mostly out of wood. Do you have any tips or suggestions on how to make the camera tilt up and down while stationary on the jib? I've been thinking about different solutions for that but can't come up with anything reliable. Thanks!

Hi there,

The popular way is to make the jib head able to swivel, then attach a separate rod like 4"-6" form the original pivot point. Then this rod runs down to the operator and has to be mounted at a point that can pivot too. You can attach a handle to that assembly to tilt the head manually.

The way I do it now is have the rod fixed to the base of the jib arm so it always keeps the head parallel with the ground no matter how high or low the arm is. Then i use a electronic pan/tilt head to change the camera angle.

here is a little better example, but not my rig:

can you please send me password for me look at the photos.. Your JIG looks almost professional and very reasonable price. I used those posts for my fence.. I know it is very light and strong.. Good idea to use it for crane. Keep it up a good job

how did your pan/tilt head unit work out? Id like to say i have a bit of experience with different sets of electronics on my diy pan/tilt head.
