workflow, what do you think?

I'm in pre-pro on a feature length doc, I already have access to 3 Sony HVR-Z1Us so I will be working with HDV format. Here's the workflow I have in mind, is there room for improvement?

Shoot Sony HVR-Z1U in HDV 1080i

Capture:

VTR HVR-M10U HDV via firewire into >
HD-Connect LE via HD-SDI 720p out into >
DeckLink HD Pro PCIe

Edited in FCP5 on 2.5Quad, with SATA Raid.

Distribution will be on standard DVD, with the slight option of an HD broadcast. So my goal is to get the highest quality out of the Z1U.

Will the Convergent Design box add it's value ($2k) to the quality of the footage?

I think your workflow may cause a few headaches, with all the conversions and what not. I don't think going to from 1080i HDV to uncompressed 720p up front is going to add anything to your footage.... it will definately cost you hdd space though.

I went to a seminar in NYC where Douglas Spotted Eagle spoke, and someone asked a similar question. The answer ended up sounding something like:

1. Shoot 1080i
2. Capture using a (lossless) intermediate codec, I'll have to look at see what the mac intermediates are, but this will make editing a lot smoother.
3. Edit
4. Render out highest quality
5. Convert for distribution (rent HDCAM deck, convert to 720p or SD, etc)

Logiclly this makes a ton of sense to me , in that you not converting things two and three times before you even start to edit. And if you feel you need to deinterlace before you edit you can plop that in there as step 2 and 1/2... I hear natress plugins are all the rage these days for mac deinterlacing.

Hope this helps :)
