Workflow suggestions for shooting 16:9 1080 and cropping to 2.35 720?

Hi,

I understand the camera is new, and most likely no one has tried this. I am wanting to get an end result of 720P 2.35 aspect ratiofrom an HVX.

I assume it would be best to shoot in 1080/24 and crop the frame (not 720)?

Is there a way to flag a standard definition DVD to take advantage of this? I understand how std def DVDs can be flagged for 16x9 (not to waste resolution on black), but how do major Hollywood releases handle to wider 2.35 to get the best resolution on a std definiton DVD? (A workaround until HD DVD/Blue Ray is available).

Thanks for any help or insight. I was really impressed with the shipping version of the HVX I played with yesterday. Much cleaner noise than the last generation engineering sample and I have no issues with the "sharpness" or "resolution" whatsoever...having seen / used the Z1U and XLH1. A really impressive image!

You would encode a cropped 16:9 anamorphic image. So in your 1080 timeline you would crop/mask to 2.35:1 and then export the 16:9 timeline as anamorphic SD. This would be your best bet.

Hi Brian. DVDs of 2.35 movies are stored/flagged as 16:9 as well as letterboxed within that format. (There is no additional level of anamorphic storage available for SD DVDs.) Thus, you would be editing and exporting your footage as 16:9 throughout the entire post process. The only difference is that you'd be adding masking to crop it down to 2.35.
