Workflow/output to HD and SD

Like many, I am transitioning to HD after have been involved in SD for over 25 years.

I have a HVX200 and use Avid Xpress Pro HD (Studio Complete). I have a potential client to whom I said I could shoot and output in HD (for potential future uses) and also in SD for immediate use. The video project is for a 30 sec. to 1 min. infomercial (NTSC).

I am hoping that there are those here who have already crossed this bridge and who have an established reliable workflow that they have used.

Does anyone have a workflow that would entail using an HVX camera shooting in one of its HD modes (not sure which one to use either); then editing in Avid Xpress Pro HD; then outputting to both HD and SD (SD would need to be BetaSP and/or DV tape and DVD).

Thank you so much. Perhaps a thorough answer will many other beyond myself.

I'm not sure about the HVX, but for the HDV I've been editing I've been outputting DNxHD Quicktime files of the completed movie to an external hard disk or split across several DVDs, and outputting DVCPRO-50 for DVDs. So far no-one has actually needed an HD tape output, other than going back to HDV so they could check it out on an HD monitor.

DNxHD was about the best I could come up with for an HD master format since I don't have an HD deck to record out to.

Seach this Avid forum for some answers to this. Ask any follow-up question. :)

Thanks for the responses.

I went to the Avid Xpress Pro HD forum and believe I located the mother of all links to a thread concerning a viable workflow from the Avid for HD to SD DVD. Now, to be sure, it speaks of material originating on HDV, but I think the same workflow could apply to the DVCPRO HD material originating in the HVX200. I am certainly going to give it a try anyhow.

What I'm not sure about is what settings to place my camera in to start with. Should I do 720/30p, or 1080i/60p? Or if I wanted to go for the film look, can I shoot in 720/24p? Or are all those subjective personal creative decisions?

Anyhow the thread for the link that went into depth about workflow is: http://www.avid.com/exchange/forums/1/92893/ShowThread.aspx:)

Timothy,

I have shot every frame rate possible with the HVX. IMO, 1080/60i gave me the best picture/color ect.
(PS - there is no 1080/60p: probably just a typo on your part.)

I felt 720/24pn looked more filmlike than 1080i/24p.

I did a project last summer in 720/24pn, with variable framerates, edited in the timeline, exported a quicktime reference: Native Demensions, took it into Sorenson squeeze, compressed mpeg2 DVD 16:9. Put disc into DVD player and it worked perfectly first try, looked great too!

Eric,
I just shot some stuff using Firestore, so I had to use 720/24p - not pn as the Firestore can't do that. I brought in into my Avid timeline - project set to 59.940. It played great in the timeline - although I couldn't see anything on my client monitor (I'm using a Mojo).

I exported a QT Ref with native dimensions. Then I opened up the QT ref in ProCoder (it came in as Non-Interlaced). I set the oupt from ProCoder to 16:9 non-interlaced. Next, I brought the resultant files into Sonic DVD and created a DVD. The DVD plays on my normal every day TV, but there is a lot of "jaggies" around the edges of objects - as if something is not interlaced - or is interlaced.

That is my point of failure. Do you have any suggestions?

I am thinking you will just have to trouble shoot, I haven't used procoder or Sonic. try setting field dominance to lower. And can't mojo do a live output?
