Workflow: Dvcprohd or Apple Prores -- Mixing HPX170 w/ Canon 5d MkII

I could use some answers as to what would be the best workflow for an editing project I just acquired.

I have 50GB of Panasonic HPX170 footage shot at 1080 24P (recorded to a firestore which was captured at 29.98fps for some reason)(Also obviously in a DVCPRO HD Compression)

I also have 80GB Of Canon 5D Footage at 23.98fps. (In an H.264 Compression)

What are the steps I need to take to most time effectively get these formats to work in the same timeline in FCP before I start editing? I am looking to ultimately edit the entire project in 23.98fps. So I need to convert my HPX170 footage to 23.98fps as well as match up codecs between cameras somehow.

What codec would be best to edit in (DVCPRO HD or Apple Proress)?
What is the best way to either convert or apply a Pull Down on the Panasonic Footage?

Thanks in Advance!

Keep the DVCPRO HD as DVCPRO HD. Convert the 5D footage to ProRes. Edit in a ProRes sequence. No pulldown is needed...they are both 23.98.

Ah, yes. 24pA...ADVANCED at 1080i. Only 720p does pN.

I wouldn't transcode DVCPRO HD though. All it would do is make it take up more space. Just edit in a ProRes timeline

(Sheesh, is all I did with this post is come in an nickpick apart Alex's post? Sorry.)

Actually, you got your first post in before I did, and I deleted mine 'cause we both said mostly the same thing. Oh, well...

Hey Shane, appreciate the help. To clarify:

Keep the DVCPRO HD as DVCPRO HD. Convert the 5D footage to ProRes. Edit in a ProRes sequence.

Wont this cause additional rendering workflow? using both codecs?

Convert the 5D footage to ProRes.

Confirming settings in compressor: Frame controls: On, Resize Filter: Better, Output fields: Same as Source, Deinterlace: Fast, Adaptive details: Checked, Rate Conversion: Better
Audio: passthrough, which will in the end be linear pcm...correct?

No pulldown is needed...they are both 23.98.

Is this because the HPX170 recorded the footage at 1080/24p but when sent to the firestore, the firestore wrapped it in a 29.97 .mov? So the footage is actually in 23.98 already?

For some reason I thought I read that allowing FCP due to this in the timeline would cause problems and that it was better to 'reverse telecine' the footage prior to edit.

Thanks

ProRes and DVCPRO-HD will play very well together in a ProRes Sequence.

Use the Canon E1 Movie plugin for FCP's Log & Transfer window to ingest the 5D footage. Be sure you download the version 1.2 of that plugin. Very improved, doesn't need anything but the H.264 files from the 5D. Great quality, and ingest as ProRes LT.
