Workflow advice

Hey, I've been making little videos for a while, but about to take on my first real project (music video).

In my arsenal I have Premiere 1.5 and After Effects CS3. Ive been experiemtning with test footage and color corection AE and am very happy with what I can do.

However, I'll be editing the video in Premiere, but color correcting in AE. Whats the best way to do this? Edit the whole video together in Premiere, render it, import it to AE and color correct it? This isnt perfect because I may want to affect parts of the video differntly.

Should I render out each shot individually from premiere, take it into AE, correct it, and put it back in?

I'd be interested in what you guys have to say!

Cheers,
Rich

I would suggest taking the source footage and color correcting it in AE and then exporting the footage uncompressed --- then bring it into premiere and editi it. This should result in the least amount of compression in the end, and you will be color correcting with source footage rather than recompressed footage.

You might want to consider doing difficult/high-end special effects in AE while you are color correcting.

CCing the source footage does not allow much scene to scene consideration. I think thats a bad idea (unless all the footage looks the same and is meant to look the same). A lot of footage would take a long time and the comp length would be impossible to navigate.

There is no Direct link between CS3 AEFX and Prem 1.5 so this would be cumbersome and also it would double the amount of space required on the hard drive.

How would you apply effects before you have an edit?

Why not CC edited clip by clip in Premiere? Faster and more user friendly.

I'm using a friends computer... He has magic bullet installed on AE, and i really like using that plugin. Not sure if i can use it in Premiere?

I have no idea what your project is meant to be but here goes:

Why not CC in premiere to get the footage looking consistant across cuts (white balance, saturation etc) then export it all uncompressed and apply your look of choice across the whole project in AE using Magic Bullet?

If you'd prefer to apply different looks to each clip (or tweak individual clip looks) you could always try the Magnum Script in AE to split your project up into separate layers before doing the looks thing (this'll take a hell of a lot of rendering though as you need to apply the effect to each layer)

:)

Its a music video, mostly just going for a dramtic film look... Maybe some non-cheesy special effects if it feels right.

Thanks for all your input. Not as straightforward as i thought it would be since everyone has their own ideas.

I cant seem to get magic bullet to work in Premiere, so i thiunk ill just CC all the raw footage in AE, export it uncompressed, then edit it using Premiere. If i do any epecial FX ill do it as its own clip in AE and bring it into premiere.

Thanks for your ideas guys. Any other ideas welcome.

you may be able to simply open up your PPRo project within AE by importing it. that way your not doing an initial render just to get it into AE. if you were to have PPRo CS3 you could certainly do this, or just copy and paste your timeline into AE. give it a shot with what youve got. I dont know for sure if AE Cs3 wil open older PPRo files but its certainly worth trying.

well lock your edit, color correct it in Premiere, and then grade it in AE.

but consider upgrading to Premiere CS3, there is a gazillion workflow enhancements, not to mention a gazillion other.

Edit/cuts and basic effects in premiere > audio in sound booth or whathaveyou > advanced FX, titling and CC in AE > author disk(s) in encore.
