Work in progress reel

Nice music !
I really enjoyed watching your reel and agree it's a little to long.
The main reason it feels to long is you have to many average shots in with the good stuff.
Set yourself a timeline with an in and out point of 90 seconds and go from their.
Let me know if you need help cutting it down I have a few suggestions as ever !

My only beef: I'd be wary of sending this out with this music. This is the song that was used during the last 5 min of " Six Feet Under", which in my opinion is the BEST 5 min of television I have ever seen.
The problem with using this amazing song is you will surely spark instant feelings of nostalgia, and when your potential agency comes back to earth after fantasizing about one of the greatest shows in existance, they will surely be uninterested in the "music" video that is taking place at the moment.
They may even find using this song to be blaspheme. Seriously, don't mess with peoples "Six feet under" memories.

Just my opinion.

I would agree with it being a bit long, many of the shots seemed repedative and flat after you've seen the same set up more than once.

I'd say that this is a really nice promo piece but not as mush as a demo as it's mostly the similar locations and interiors. Kind of great way to showcase one project but not very diverse. I did really enjoy it.. but more of a promo than a demo. That being said.. everything did go well together and seem connected. Almost too connected and a bit drawn out. Nice though!

Also, for a youtube vid..it's looks sweet. What were your settings and compression on the upload. Some of my youtube ones have looked like crap but the originals were great. What guidlines are you sticking with.. etc. INfo is good because it looked and played nice on that...

Thanks for showing ... Your bathroom feature looks very promisng.. btw

I agree with Justyn. it feels more like you are watching a promo for a film than a DOP showreel. Also try and mix up your shots and styles to show what you are capable of as a DOP, at the moment there is too much movement (dolly, jib work etc...) and not enough simple but beautifully shot static stuff. Take a serious look at what footage you have to work with, then decide on what you think is missing and go out and shoot it (I know, easier said than done). That way you end up with the style and variety that you feel represents what kind of work you are trying to get.

Thanks for posting.

thanks all for the comments - I appreciate it

the song is breathe by Sia - great song - and yes its from six feet under - but i couldnt resist.

I think when I cut it down it will feel less like a promo since I will lose a lot of the shots. And I might add in a couple statics (thanks peter for the tip) although this is the one area you get a different opinion from many people. Some people hiring get turned on by all the movement - but if the person hiring knows what to look for in a static shot then they can be more effective.

as for posting quality - I exported 720p from avid - compressed with sorenson to 1Mbit/sec quicktime and then uploaded to youtube - came across pretty well.

thanks again for the feedback - more is always welcome

Very nice but I do agree with everyone (including yourself) that is is a little long and and also some shots seem too similar to each other. I think part of the similarity is with the color correcting/lighting. It's all similar from shot to shot. I noticed a few scenes where people where trapped in their bathroom, maybe these scenes could be color corrected different to give it a darker mood, even if it's not what it will be in the movie. Also, there was a couple of shots that seemed very short, I'd be careful of that because it is easy to quickly capture a great shot and then loose it, but it looks better if you can stay on a great shot and hold on to it. But all the same, your very talented - Good Luck

I agree that it is very good. I also agree that it is a bit long. I did like the variations in using light and different camera angles as well as rack focus. It was a bit repetitive as well. That being said, you do some nice work.
