Woody Allen

I do find though, that as a general rule your proximity to Manhattan will effect your view of his work. :)

I definitely agree with that. I don't think Woody Allen is overrated and during his prime he produced some amazing films.

Some of my favorites:

Zelig
Stardust Memories
Annie Hall
Sweet and Lowdown
Radio Days
Hannah and Her Sisters

What about "Crimes and Misdemeanors"?

As with many actors (and directors), if you don't like the guy, you probably can't get past that fact and enjoy his work. I happen to enjoy the neurotic character he spawned, and I pretty much grew-up watching his films. Usually when you like a character, you want to see more of him/her, such as James Bond, so I don't mind that he generally plays the same guy (uh, Jack Nicholson anyone?).

I disagree that he makes the same movies/situations over and over. His filmography is full of romantic comedies, but many are cleverly disguised as take-offs on sci-fi, noir, prison/crime, banana republics (pun intended), musicals, etc.

Films like "What's Up Tiger Lily" and "Zelig" were groundbreaking, their ideas copied over and over in films and TV.

I think Celebrity was the last movie he made that I enjoyed, but I'm a little behind. Everyone makes crap once in a while, and some of his recent ones (Hollywood Ending) remind me of the usual comic drivel that permeates the cinemas.

I've recently gotten into Woody Allen, and I don't know what was keeping me. So far I've seen "Play It Again, Sam" "Annia Hall" "Interiors" "Manhattan" "Stardust memories" "The Purple Rose of Cairo" "Hannah And Her Sisters" and 'Husbands and Wives" and I love them all. I have a long logn way to go, but I love what I've seen so far. This thread is really old. I think it's time to bring it back, though based on what I've read here so far, there doesn't seem to be much love for Woody. Hannah ad Her Sisters is my favorite so far, with Husbands and Wives and Stardust Memories a close second and third (I especially love the verite style of Husbands and Wives and the Fellini look/style of Stardust Memories). Anyone else have any thoughts on Woody?

I'm a Woody fan. Don't love all his movies but he's one of the greats. I love that he just keeps on churning them out. Some good, some bad, but he's a filmmaking machine. I wish Coppola would take a hint and put down his damn wine and get back to work.
