Woody Allen

Josh

I dig it brother!

X-Man - On role playing night I call her Sophia. (I wasn't contradicting myself; not even with Sophia would I)

Like i said before. He is very very over rated. He is pretentious and his films are pretentious. He's too self-obsessed. he can't look out of his own existence.Anyway, i find him highly snotty and annoying. Now Ingmar Bergman is someone we should be talking about!

Too bad this thread is about Woody Allen.

Much to my wife's dismay, this thread has caused me to pull out my Woody Allen collection again.

I picked up Hannah and Her Sisters and will watch it tomorrow night (can't watch it tonight because I have a soccer game). I'll likely also be on a Woody Allen kick the next week or so thanks to this thread.

I was hoping now one would start a Woody Allen thread since I"ve had to endure him dominating IFC for the last month. His movies bore me as does his humor and besides I think he's his own grandpa.

Okay, I watched Hannah and her Sisters last night and I loved it.

"I had a wonderful time. It was like the Nuremburg trials."

Great dialogue! I think some people don't like his movies because they don't like Woody's persona. I don't love all of his movies, but I dug Hannah, and I like some of his newer films such as Melinda and Melinda.

That's kind of my general perception (as mentioned) and the issue is that it seems every film he does is EXACTLY the same one; self centered-neurotic-wimp-loser-meets-kooky-attractive-young-girl...................................

Although the new one coming out looks nothing like his previous work; which may be a good thing

I think it's sort of true that all his films are the same, John. But I think it has something to do with thefact that he's in most of them and a lot of people just don't like his acting style. If you look at Melinda and Melinda, the will Farrell character doesn't come off like a self centered-neurotic-wimp-loser. However, 20 years ago, Woody would have played that role, and the same dialogue would have come off the way you describe.

He played a different character in Anything Else. It's not one of my favorite movies by any means, but it was ammusing to see Woody Allen as a self centered neurotic gun-toting nut who takes a gold club to a guy's car in a fot of rage.

who else besides Woody Allen and Charlie Chaplin has written, directed, and starred (as THE SAME CHARACTER) in almost all of their films?

I think Woody Allen is a genius and i think he is dismissed by a lot of people because the character that he plays can be pretty obnoxious. From a film maker's point of view, i don't see how anyone can say his films aren't F-ing beautiful (with a few exceptions).

My top 3 are Stardust Memories, Manhattan, and Annie Hall.

Those who don't like Allen, check out Deconstructing Harry. Woody takes more than a few cheap shots at his real-life self. And there's an amazing cast (billy crystal, bob balaban, elisabeth shue, demi moore, robin williams, eric bogosian, mariel hemingway, amy erving, julie kavner, kirstie alley, tobey maguire, julia louis-dreyfuss, stanley tucci, paul giamatti...)

and sofia coppola is only hot if you're NOT looking at her profile and her big honking nose.

the same is true for me.

Lloyd Kaufman?

This does not make it a good thing.

I have a feeling if you like European Cinema you probally like Woody Allen.

I'm a big Woody Allen fan, I don't love everything he's done, but I do think there are some classics there.

I do find though, that as a general rule your proximity to Manhattan will effect your view of his work. :)
