Woodland Hills - Non profit Piece

Thought I should share this. I was hired as DP and editor on this project. All HPX170, no adapter. Sound was being run right into the camera.

Unfortunately, budget did not allow for original music, but I'm very happy with the final results.

Also, take some time to check out what Woodland Hills does, it's a really great place for kids to get the proper direction they need, as you will see from the short doc.

Great Job! I am continually impressed with the HPX170. A good reason to make the purchase no less. On a side note, I am glad to see people help great places like Woodland Hills.

Hey dm, this was a very powerful piece, but I do see where an adapter could of made it that much more dramatic. But still very well done and i'm sure the client was smiling ear to ear after seeing this.

Very nicely done.
Love the mix of wide/CU interviews, would have been difficult with an adapter.
The music was worked well and was very effective, no worries there.

Simple.
Clean.
Powerful.
Meaningful.

Thanks for sharing.

I especially liked the bloom effect you did to half the frame for the title cards- would you mind giving tips on how you achieved that?

I used a custom gradient and the bloom effect in final cut. Then I cc'ed each half separately. It's pretty simple once you find the gradient.

Go under the "A" box in the viewer, then go to render, choose custom gradient. Next sandwich the gradient between a duplicate of your clip, right click the top clip and change the composite mode to luma. Hopefully that makes sense?

This piece is a good example of not "having" to spend thousands of dollars on adapters. I disagree with the earlier statement about an adapter making the shots more dramatic.

The adapter might have made this piece feel a little too staged. Make the people look like actors. Just my opinion. You ca get great DOF by just pulling your camera back from the subject and zooming in.

Great Job.

I agree that the mix of CU and wide interview shots was good. I also agree that the DOF was appropriate for this work. I really liked the lighting -- especially the blown out windows behind the people being interviewed. I just think it looks good, contrary to the opinion of some that you should nd the windows.

I liked the slight panning, tilting motion during the interviews, instead of a completely static shot. It added interest, I thought. Sound was really good too. What mic were you using?

The images from the HPX170 are so clean. You did a great job. I hope to do something of this caliber.

Thanks!

I was running a Sennheiser me66 on a boom, direct into the camera. It's a great mic for the price, I love it.
