Won't Power up

Brand new user to this forum and darn glad I found it. Anyway, I just want describe the situation that happened with me and my camera.

I had used the DVX100 one evening, all night. The next morning day, it's time to shoot and the darn thing won't power up. Numerous batteries, and AC and nothing. It's dead. I'm thinking what could I have possibly done done in the span of seven hours? I take it to a repair center, wait the the standard two weeks and here's what happened:

The tripod mount of the DVX100 apparently goes rather deep into into the camera. A tip of the mount fractured and was floating around in the camera and eventually shorted the cam out. The tech replaced the internal fuse, but it blew once he turned it on again, so the damage is board level. It's looking like 500-800 dollar repair that may or may not be covered under the exteded warranty. We will see.

It would seem that Panny would put something, that would probably cost less than nickel, that would shield the mount from the internals of the camera. Regardless, my pain is hopefully your future gain and be VERY careful with your tripod mount and how you tighten it. I THOUGHT we were being cautious, but apparently not cautious enough.

Bummer...

Thanks for sharing your horror story. Maybe it will help keep others from having the same misfortune.

I wish you much better luck in the future. :)

Re: Won't Power up

Anyone know of something you could screw permanently into the tripod mount hole in the camera and then use that "something" to mount to a tripod, protecting the camera?

This seems to be one of the most sensitive areas of the DVX...

Re: Won't Power up

Most high-end tripod heads have a quick release wedge or something similar. You put it on once and that's it. If you go to the DV Rack ad ( at the top of this site) you will see one on the bottom of a DVX held by the geeky guy.

Re: Won't Power up

I had the same problem with my dvx word for word as you described it. It was covered under warranty by Panasonic who said "they were aware of the problem. This was in Vancouver Canada if that means anything. Hope this helps

Re: Won't Power up

PS
This whole problem came about by building a home made steady cam. The mounting screw was a tad too long and punched through the flimsy tri-pod mount housing on the dvx. I post this as a warning to all those dvx'ers who may try something similar. THE HOUSING CAN AND WILL BREAK IN A HEARTBEAT!!!

Re: Won't Power up

Got it back a couple of days ago, and as suspected the bill came to around 600, but I do have an extended warranty so...

most def a near fatal flaw on an otherwise spectacular product.
