wonder years opening spoof

decided to take some of our mini35 prototype ("Sandbo35" by name i guess) footage and have some fun. hehe.

http://files.powdahound.com/kyle/wonderyears.zip (74 megs, watch out!)

hope you all enjoy, was going for that super8 look of the wonder years opening back in the late 80's/early 90's. (hopefully you guys get the reference)

this was done pretty quick but you might find it amusing. :)

Re: wonder years opening spoof

Wow, gotta love that amazing DOF. The end captured my attention better. Especially when the camera came off the tripod or whatever. Most super8 cameras were handheld.

Re: wonder years opening spoof

Try putting in some film grain, scratches, dust, jitter, and a faint light blue tint to simulate yellow layer failure. Be very subtle about them all, and with what you've already got, you'll knock it out of the park!

Re: wonder years opening spoof

Tell us more about your "mini35" prototype. I like what it does!

I know the Super8 look may have been secondary to what you were doing, but if you are trying to get an authentic look, here are some things to try (beyond David's suggestion to use dust, grain, and scratches - you used some jitter, but not much).

Wait, before I suggest, let me say that some of your shooting techniques, especially toward the end were great. Old super8 shooters often had difficulty framing a shot properly and did a lot of jump cuts.

Okay, first, your frame rate was way too fast. I think the super8 is 15 or 18 frames per second. Second, that indoor kitchen shot wouldn't work. You'd need blinding camera lights (we had four 100 watt floods mounted on a hand held light set) for interior shots. Without tons of light, super 8 came out crummy. The fact that the guy's face is dark and the light behind him was bright just wouldn't happen like that in super8. Usually on indoor shots, stuff in front of the camera was bright and often washed out while stuff farther back and off to the sides was dark. Also, the lens is too good. Some of the shots were just too crisp and clear. I'll bet your NLE could change that pretty easily. Not a real heavy duty blur, but just not so crisp. Then add those film artifacts David mentioned above, and you've got a real super 8 look.

I used super8 until the early 80s. My dad used it since the 50s.

Re: wonder years opening spoof

Hey Kyle, that looked great. What settings did you use and what techniques in post did you use?

And how did you get that crazy depth of field? I know that can't be possible with just the camera.

Please elaborate.

Ted

Re: wonder years opening spoof

hey guys. i'd like to preface with saying this was something quickly done in final cut pro HD with some of the footage we took testing settings on our homebrew mini35 adapter (Sandbo35 officially).

the jump cuts were simply done in the NLE, just razor the clips and start frantically mismatching them. and deleting a few, etc. we didn't go so far as to get some film grain in there... i will try it though just for fun.

and no, that isn't just the cameras DOF, that is from the Sandbo35. our adapter is a fairly simple design. right now it uses Pentax lenses. it's built to be easily removable. hopefully once we finalize some of the things i'll post some shots of it in action. believe me you'll be pleased! what prompted me to do this little 'test' was because the first run of our adapter, like with most static setups, the grain was way too much to any use. but it gave the recolection of super8 style footage.

but no, the goal isn't to get that effect, it was a 'mistake' in the early going of our R&D.

more info to come... hope this helps

Damn I love that song; either by the Beatles or Joe. This definatley looked old school. Dont know if I d want to shoot with it though.

Re: wonder years opening spoof

john, i'm gonna post a movie of it without all the weird masking :) we were able to reduce the grain issue to almost nothing.

it really does give a close-to-mini35 quality image.

Re: wonder years opening spoof

Keep us informed. I would like to see the true nature of it; although I am digging the WONDER YEARS look you were able to pull off. Looked bug time like my old school Super 8 shorts.
