With all the DVXs floating around. . .

...why are so few Panasonic DVX100 class films hitting our cinema screens?

People likened the DVX movement to that of the 16mm indie movement of the early 90s and late 80s. But it seems unless you've shot your film on FILM, you're guaranteed no release.

When was the last time someone took a DVX100 and made a truly great piece of art?

Just because a lot of people can afford to shot with a DVX doesn't mean that their stories are any good. At the end of it all, that is all that matters.

And there are a number of DVX films out there in circulation.

It's all top secret! lol I would guess that most of these shows don't want to brag about being shot on a cheap camera! When my company bought the HVX200 my boss called is a toy and didn't want to use it cause he thought the clients wanted to see a "bigger" camera on there shoots. That way they would think they are getting their monies worth.

Now I don't agree with all of his feelings... I'm just letting you know what I went through... and thats with the HD camera!! He didn't care what the picture looked like.

I noticed that Jackass 2 was done with dvx's dunno about part 1. They may have had other cameras but the ones shown were dvx's. Not that it is a real movie, or anything to brag about. lol

if i could just get some dependable actors i could start shooting my comedy. unfortunately i don't have any money and the people willing to work for nothing aren't reliable.

Well November winning cinematography and sundance and iraq in fragements bringing home an oscar...I would hardly call that chopped liver.

Because making a film that gets picked up for theatrical release is nearly impossible. Very, very, very few films get picked up for theatrical, and most of those that do have large budgets behind them.

But it seems unless you've shot your film on FILM, you're guaranteed no release.
Shooting on film won't guarantee you any type of release either. There are plenty of $250,000+ 35mm films sitting on peoples' shelves that never saw the inside of the theater.

In 2005 (or was it 2006) there were five DVX films in the theater at the same time, which is probably unprecedented for any video camera. Two DVX films have been nominated for Oscars and two won "Best Cinematography" awards at Sundance. Sounds like a lot, but when you consider that there are something like 100,000 DVXs out there, then yeah it's a very low percentage of users that are seeing that type of success.

But then again, it's a very low percentage of all filmmakers that see that kind of success as well.

and iraq in fragements bringing home an oscar....

Iraq In Fragments didn't win the Oscar; it was up against "An Inconvenient Truth" and that's the picture that won that year. But Iraq In Fragments was nominated for an Oscar, and that's still really impressive!
