"With all respect..."

This is a segment from a Colonel's farewell video I'm making.  A little set-up is needed.

This colonel has a history of breaking planes and in the first few scenes he is called on to fly a C5 into a major storm to check wind speeds.  Then it jumps to a lighthearted picture montage of our base population.  When it comes back to the live footage I have here... he has crashed landed his plane.  The flightdeck shot is to establish that there have been pages and pages of things written up as to what he broke on the plane...

Then of course, he was badly beaten up on the landing...

I'll let you see it and then I'll post my main question of what I want you to really give me feedback on...

Thanks

Man, this was awesome, very tongue-in-cheek and very, very funny, not to mention original. I just about fell out of my chair.

thanks for posting ;D

Re: "With all respect..."

Ok -- a few people have seen it...

My question was:

Before I added the music soundtrack to the hospital scene I ALWAYS laughed my butt off. It was very slapstick. Adding the music you wonder if it is funny. I wanted the contrast of the slapstick with the serious music and was really wondering if it came off...

Thanks

Re: "With all respect..."

Actually it was the music that really added to the black humor aspect of it. It also gave it a soap opera feel which made it even more funny imo.

Re: "With all respect..."

I think it’s excellent so far, definitely keep us posted….

Thoughts…

(*) I love the anesthetic! The timing and the hammer whack was positively LOL!

(*) You have a unique advantage with the access you have regarding the people and locations. It adds a real privileged  “behinds the scenes” impact to the viewer since your able to go into these military facilities that most will never be able to see. That’s a great advantage imo and it really creates an interest. (I know you say it’s a farewell film so your target audience is desensitized to those places and people but for Joe Public like me it’s very cool).

(*) It really looks as if all of the actors here are having a good time, I’m assuming they’re all familiar to the Colonel and I’m willing to bet this will be something he really appreciates and will never forget.

(*) The timing so far is very nice, I thought the phone conversation timing especially worked. The cut scenes to the reactions of actors during the operation also.

Great job so far, the amount of people and locations involved adds to the ‘scope feel’ (it feels like a big project) also and the location changes keeps it moving, I can’t wait to see the whole thing.

(EDIT: The music item was posted after I posted so I missed it, I agree with disjecta here)

Re: "With all respect..."

I'm not sure I can post all of it... I've got some tower scenes that I didn't get permission to film... I'll wait until the Wing Commander sees it and the I'll ask her.

There are NO actors -- as by the maintenance guys by the wheel well... LOL! The DR is the Medical Group Deputy commander... and the "Thumb's Up" guy is the head surgeon.

Everyone wanted to play.

Thanks.

That's was classic and so natural followed by the direct camera look! Yeah, big oops on the 'actor' comment, I should have qualified that but everyone did a really good job. It's going to add so much value for the Colonel to see all of familiar faces playing these roles imo.

I hope you can get that clearance, I'd really like to see the whole thing...

Re: "With all respect..."

Ok -- I'm on the fence here and against the time wall...

Here is the hospital scene without the music.

I'm REALLY torn about the music in the first version. I think it is TOO hard. When I cut the scene I cut it to be funny... like fall down haha funny. When I added the music, I found myself being pulled too hard by the music and not letting myself laugh. - Oh... and my Mom doesn't like the music either... she feels too sorry the guy died. My wife is out of town so the only other advisors I have is you.

I've got to pick a version to show to the Wing Commander - The lady who answers the phone - tomorrow. Yes, I could show her both... and probably will.

Re: "With all respect..."

1. tripod tripod tripod. or a steady cam.
2. the tone of the music killed it for me. if you had gone with say....some mock tv show music from those discovery channel type shows inside the e.r. or something...or more intense...the slow dramatic mow stuff didnt set right.

Ok -- good point. I posted on a different thread to John H. about how 'hand-held' something he had shot looked, but then if youlook back there weren't any handheld shots.

I was going for that hustle-bustle cinema-crazy feel. Guess I missed. Never considered they use a tripod. D'oh!

Thanks - Music it is... tripod next time.

Re: "With all respect..."

I think the surgery scence has a comic "circus" feel, but the somber music kills it. Maybe try saving the somber music until "we're losing him," and using something else for the beginning of the scene.

Re: "With all respect..."

Oooooo - there's a thought. Circus march type music... cow bells and rachetthingies... keystone cops.

I wish I could go back for pick-ups... I'd have the doc yell, "And turn down that music!" as he went for the phone.

Thanks, Gabe.

Re: "With all respect..."

Hey Captain... This is funny!!! I work on Hill AFB, and sent this to some freinds that ask me what base is this at... I told them I will ask. So?
any how I loved it and they do to... Understanding a farwell makes it all the better...
I think everyone will love it.

Re: "With all respect..."

Hey Bryster... are you from the famed Hill Video guys?  I've always wanted to work with you/them... in my life as a band commander. I use Vandenberg a bunch for camera work I need.  The've got some great Avid jocks there too.

I'm at Travis.
