"Witch Hunt" Harry Potter Fan Film

Thought I would never do one of these till I came across a contest for it and thought I'd give it a shot. Footage looks very good so far! It's an 8 minute short film with some very good visual effects you will enjoy; also with original music composed by Erich Barto.

This version you are about to see is only a version for a contest. There are still a few visual effects missing and some that need tweaking. Some audio at some points is just a little bit off. You might not notice but some of you might, just don't try to look for it, just enjoy the film :)

Canon EOS Rebel t1i
Colorista from The Magic Bullet for Color Correction
The camera only supports 30fps at 720p
We used a 35mm and a 55mm

Or you could buy the new 7D that is out. Shoots 24p up to 1080x1980 ! Cheaper than the 5D as well, but because of a smaller censor size, but still good for film. Vimeo some footage, looks very promising!

ehh almost.. I think you can get a t1i for around 700 - 900 then the 7D is only at 1,600 last time I checked. Compared to the 5D being at 3,000

Yeah, the audio is pretty noticeably "off" at certain points. Also, your final mix is noticeably unbalanced. Dialogue appears far too low at points, and music is far too loud.

Footage looks clean and nice (and the effects look pretty nifty for something put together so quickly). Though, at times, some shots look like very graded--I'm guessing you used magic bullet.

I'd ditch the opening credits...Just throw a title up there and get going. A big pet peeve of mine is elongated opening credit sequences on short little movies. Inevitably, I just scan right past them.

Nice job!

Well when I made this thread is not when I started the film. So are you saying 3 months is quick? We finished shooting in late august. So really 2 months of work. It wasn't that bad.

But we are doing re edits now. So hopefully those will come out better. I'll be bumping this once more when I release the full version.

My bad, I thought you turned this around in about a month.

Hi Ramsaur,

I had the chance to watch Witch Hunt, and here is what I thought:

The Good:
  • Nicely shot.
  • Very nice FX.
  • Beautifully made wands.
  • The music fit well.
  • The Potter font looked great.
The Bad:
  • Not the best of acting. Very over the top.
  • There is one FX, when the three deatheasters first materialize, where there is a jump in the shot.
  • The story is very cliche. I think it required a better story to complement your grasp of the FX.
Overall, it was a good effort, but fell short mainly due to the story and acting. Harry Potter films were based upon very good stories, with compelling characters. This is a short, so limited characters will enable you to better establish your characters. I thought the FX were very well done and the music fit well. 6 out of 10 for me. I look forward to your next short.
