Wireless System

Can anyone tell me anything about the Shure PG14/PG185 wireless lav system? I've heard that you want diversity, and this has "internal diversity," which I assume is another antenna built into the receiver.

I know I have to have some sort of wireless set up to record audio at wedding ceremonies, and price is certainly a consideration. I know that for 300 bucks, this can't be the top of the line, but is it good quality equipment?

DMChord,
I am pretty sure that the Shure PG14 is wired for AC use. If you are shooting in a studio, it might be okay, but otherwise, its probably a poor purchase for use with the HVX. You will end up tethered to the wall outlet.

Sennheiser G2 is the best 'cheap' option. Lectrosonics makes a 100 series which is better than the G2 but still fairly inexpensive. Remember, you should really save some extra cash for a new lav mic, rather than just using the stock one that comes with your new wireless lav (unless quality really isn't an issue).

I have a G2 system(Which works well), and a Tram lav. The Tram costs 2/3 as much as the wireless system, and is well worth it. I used it the first time in filming for a pilot for a reality show for MTV(Talk about guerilla filmmaking!), and it sounded amazing. Made me look great. They were so pleased(As well as surprised)at how good the sound was, they use me almost exclusively.

Another here for the G2s. I think the Lectrosonics are FANTASTIC also and well worth the money, but were not within our scope at the time.

Take it from Awakened an 3rd floor on using a mic other than the ones that come with the kits. If you must use a stock mic, get the G2s with me2. DO NOT GET THE G2s with the ME-4. It is the biggest piece of dogcrap ever made by a German outfit. Chinese plastic film cameras have better build quality than the Me-4. And if your actively using the Me-2 count on the Me-2 cable tearing from its plug within 18 months of purchase.

BUT, the G2 packs have been total troopers and have really come through for us.

Both our G2s are fitted with MKE-Gold mics and rycot lav furries.

I could go on, but to give you a sample of my experience with this combo, the piece below might be handy....

With the exception of the card game, the sound effects and the music all voice pickup was from the MKEs on G2s ran into our 200a. Either on their waders or tapped to their t-shirts over their chests, including the interviews. Wayne's interview is not as full as Will's but the room is to blame for his interview as we were literally in an echo box when we shot that.

Hope that helps. I would definitely give a big thumbs up for the G2s with some good mics but as always, to each his own YMMV. :-)
