Wireless suggestions

Well, if you only take one bit of info from here, take this. B&H sucks. They post the lowest prices and they are a good place to search for certain gear but when you go to purchase, go anywhere else. They will sell you crap if it makes them one more buck, don't know anything about the gear they sell, and will give you no follow up help if you need it.

Places like Gotham and Coffey are the exact opposite of that. You can walk in there waving cash around and they will steer you to only that which will fulfill your needs. After the sale they totally will help you with just about anything. Most importantly they know the gear; they know what works, how well it works, and what doesn't.

Cheers

I am going to get the G2 this week, I know the lecro is better, but I need two of them and this makes them above my budget. I notice looking on the B&H website that they list different RF frequencies next to each g2 unit. (one set has: a 518-554MHZ, the next set for sale: b 626-662MHZ etc..) If each unit has an a b c channel, why do they list the g2 seperately with different part numbers? If they are the same but operate in differnet frequencies, is one freq better than another.

Also, How big an upgrade would the B6 be to replace the ME2 mic that comes with the set for sound quality. (do you ever want the me4 instead since I read here somwhere omni is better for wireles?) thanks.

PS, I am not buying for BH, I have written of some bad experiences in the HVX section

What do you guys think of fullcompass or adorama for these products? Fullcompass offers several G2 combinations, though not the one I want. ADORAMA offers the exact combo I want. I am low-budget, HQ desire right now. Like my mom used to say, "You want to eat steak on a Spam budget." Anyway, adorama has the EW135P-G2, which is the SKM135G2 (handheld transmitter w/MD835 head + EK100 cam-mount receiver) for $500. Any experience with these sellers?

bosindy,
The A, B and C are channel blocks. Each block has a number of channels the G2 can be set to but you can't change which channel block a transmitter/receiver operates in. That's set at the factory. So you have to choose which channel block you want when you buy the set. As to which channel block is best for you, that primarily depends on the UHF TV broadcast channels in your area. Sennheiser has docs for each state that shows the channel assignments in most major cities and their relation to the the G2 channel blocks. Start here:

http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/mat_dev/frequencyfinder/Freqfinder-ew.asp

There's also talk that the FCC or whoever is planning on auctioning off the UHF bands in the near future. Does anyone understand what that's about and how it will impact UHF wireless usage? I avoided the C channel block because I read at the time that some of the frequencies in that band were going to be reallocated to emergency radio use but it seems to be in flux.

Thanks for the reply Dan, I went with the C block bc it was the most empty for Boston. Wrabbit was nice enough to answer a PM on the matter. I am also interested in the plan to sell the UHF bands. My thought has always been that rather than rent, I would buy and then resell at $.80 on the dollar. This way I can spend a lot of time learning, shooting at leisure etc. for the cost, in this case, of a few hundred bucks. It seems that wireless lavs could be worthless shortly so my plan might not have been that smart. It makes me wonder why anyone at this point would spend major cash on lectros, superior quality aside. Anyone with more detailed info on the selling of the UHF bands?

Thanks,
Jim

Mystico,
The only experience I've had with either is the one time I ordered online from Adorama and every item (about 6) that I ordered went from 'in stock' on the catalog page to 'backordered' on my order. I canceled that order. I'm sure that they are better than that but that really turned me off.

If you don't mind ordering off of ebay, look for a vendor selling with a 'best offer' option. No authorized Sennheiser dealer is allowed to advertise a price below the established 'MAP' price. But that does not mean they can't sell it for less. Using the 'best offer' option, I was able to buy a couple of G2 sets last year for an additional 20% below the MAP price. Unfortunately, the company I bought from (Musician's Advocate) is no longer selling on ebay. Too bad 'cause I got good prices on a Mackie mixer and some monitors from them this way too. I just looked and I see an outfit named 'Skillex' in Atlanta has a best offer option.

I have no knowledge or experience with this company so I just point this out as an example. You can't expect rock bottom prices AND after sales support from anyone, IMHO. You get a manufacturer's warranty if it's an authorized dealer but that's it. If you think you want more, then consider the recommended pro audio shops recommended elsewhere in this forum.

if you work professionaly, UHF or little UHF, Lectro kicks the crap out of G2. When you go Lectro, you'll have a hard time going back...

which isnt to say G2 is bad, its not. its actually very good. its just that obviously, there are varying levels of good :)

Full Compass is a great store. Highly recommended. They will most likely meet any price a warehouse place like Adorama can give you (with a few exceptions). Just ask.

The sale and lost of the UHF bands won't be happening for at least a year or more likely two. This should take some time because there are people out there fighting the good fight on this. At the point they do start selling off the airwaves it should still take sometime before the airwaves are completely consumed and your wireless is useless.

Basically it means investing in wireless right now is more like buying a camera then sound equipment. You need to have a plan to get your money back in the next 2 to 3 years.

While trying not to stray into the political, there is an epidemic in our government right now of selling off anything that someone will pay for; ie, ANWAR, internet bandwidth, and the PUBLIC airwaves. These airwaves belong to you and me, the FCC is just a controlling body, a security guard we hired. Airwaves allocation allows us to openly communicate with each other. While large corps like Clear Channel buy up stations that have broadcast licenses, it is possible for any Joe Shmoe can start up his own broadcasting station with a little 100watt transmitter and a dream.

After the sale of these airwaves, this will no longer be true and one check/balance we have to keep the big boys in check will be gone (the internet is also on this chopping block: http://news.com.com/Playing+favorites+on+the+Net/2100-1028_3-6003281.html). Again, while trying to not stray into the political, I think everyone can see the danger of all the major forms of communication being only available to those with deep pockets.

Of course, there is the opposite side of the story that believes commerce/capitalism is the way to work these things out but these sales of public property are bells that cannot be un-rung.

Not trying to start a debate but just a note of what is happening in our media industry.

Cheers

Hey guys, I'm not sure what the policy is on my post, but I'm not the person selling, I dont know the person selling, I just came across the ad and I had read this thread today so I thought I'd give a heads up.

There is a Lectro UCR 210D for sale as well as other stuff. I dont know if it's a good price, or good items or anything, just in case it's a good deal I wanted to give a heads up.

My apologies if this post is completely retarded. (I try to keep the retardation between 50-65%.)

not retarded, but that link is expired. :) i think we all appreciate a chance at cheap, good gear from a reputable source, retardation at a stable 20%.
