FS7: Wireless Monitor For FS7

I am in the processing of mounting an FS7 on a Steadicam and was looking into a wireless monitor for the director.

I was hoping that the FS7's built-in WiFi might be used for this, but I can't seem to find anything online about this other than it controlling the camera remotely.

Is there a wireless monitoring system or set-up that anyone can recommend or suggest?

Any info appreciated.

Depends on your planned usage I guess.. but I would be a bit wary of HDMI only units.. such a crappy connection .. HD SDI BNC is alot more rugged .. and its just not the sort of thing you want to be going down in the middle of a shoot .. or having to have 100 spare HDMI cables..

I have to admit a bit of an about turn.

I went through a period of trying to go SDI only.. this probably came to an end when I snapped the SDI port on my SmallHD 702.

Now Im kind of a fan of really floppy small HDMI leads.. a harder SDi cable can stick out so far from the rig that it can get snagged and lead to the damage above. I also dropped my BMC micro off my jib (dont ask!) and the HDMI lead was ruined but the important port in the camera was not damaged - an SDI might be so firmly attached to the camera as to have broken the internal board (as happened on the 702)

Good design (that I guess is in proper gear the Alexa) would not put an SDI out on a main board but would make the part break with an easy repair this is not the case with 'prosumer' gear.

So I would not rule out HDMI per se.

One thing I dont like on the Animon Mini is the micro HDMI.. but again Ive ended up working with a tiny HDMI ribbon between that and the camera and again because the cable is so flexi and so snug to the rig the problem is kind of mitigated.

Big non flexi HDMI leads are indeed a horror!

Sam - what is your power solution for the FS7 side of the system (transmitter)?

My FS7 has a hawkwoods Vlock back which has many Dtap outputs

I also have a hawkwoods BPU plate with 2 Dtap outs.

So for sticks/handheld I could just drive everything from the rear Vlock.

Should I be building for a limited mass setup like a small steadicam on its limit would remove the Vlock plate and..

-run the camera and transmitter from the BPU plate
-run the camera from a BP30 and run the focus motor and transmitter from the BPU plate
-some other option using power that goes up the Steadicam post - my Pilot Steadicam has a single power out on the sled, a more advanced steadicam would present better onboard power.

(nb I have not used my FS7 on the Pilot much - mainly I fly my GH4/BMC micro)

+1. I got a shock with the amount of RF leakage from a crappy SDI cable we experienced a few months ago. Killed our radio mic signal and took days to trouble-shoot. Cable looked fine, but twas a badun.

Ben.

.. my Animon mini I bought from Rich Greb at CMR.. he provides a Dtap to odd little plug lead that powers the Animon from Dtap.. wonderful!

D-tap to JST power cable for transmitter (18 in.). Can be used to power the Connex or Connex mini transmitters.
