wireless mic and audio settings

Hey guys,

So I'm filming a gentlemen today who is going to be giving a presentation at the school I work for. I am going to have him wired up with my Sennheiser ew100 mic. I haven't played around with it much yet and am having a little trouble getting it to work properly.

First I could only get the sound to come out of one channel. I fixed that with messing around with the two small dials with the arrows on them marked ch1 and ch2 audio.

However my mic just isn't picking up strong audio. CH1 is set to "input 2". CH2 is set to input 2. Input 1 is off and input two is on. I'mm using an xlr cable in input 2. Am I missing something rather trivial here or am should I just be projecting my voice more?

Thanks for the help guys.

Two things to check. First there's a volume knob on the Sennheiser transmitter that you may have to adjust. Make sure that the level meter on the receiver is giving you good and proper levels, no peaking, etc. Second, check the Mic/Line switch on the DVX - if you're getting strong signals on the reciever but weak signals on the DVX meters, you probably have a mismatch on the Mic/Line switch.

Thanks Barry I'll see if I can adjust those two things. Appreciate it.

Well the volume adjustment seems to have fixed the problem.

"Make sure that the level meter on the receiver is giving you good and proper levels, no peaking,"

I'm not exactly sure how I would go about checking that. I'm not red-lining when I play back the footage if that is what you are referring to.

The red button is glowing on the on/low battery part of the mic I'm assuming that means my battery needs to be replaced soon.

No. Gotta read the manual, it'll explain this stuff for you better than I will in a paragraph. But basically the glowing light is okay, it's when it's blinking that you have to replace it. And the Sennheiser receiver has a level meter on it. There's no red on that, because the LCD is black & white. You want to make sure you're getting good levels at the receiver, then you want to match the DVX to what the receiver's showing. Don't try to just compensate by using the DVX dials -- you may be getting bum levels at the receiver, and your audio could be distorted at that point, even though the DVX levels would show it's fine. You need the receiver to be getting a good signal, and then just dump that signal to the DVX.

I was having similar problems with the same mic. Doing a google search I found a very useful video tutorial explaining step-by-step, how to set up these mics. The tutorial is for the XL-2, but most of it is focused on the Sennheiser.

The tutorial can be found on this page. Click on "Sennheiser wireless G2 Tutorial".
