Wireless Audio Issue

I was shooting today and had a bit of a problem with my wireless lav microphone. Can't figure out what is causing this interference or whatever it is. Just wanted to see if any of you know what is causing these hits in the audio?

The mic is on this woman with the horse. It is a Sennheiser G3 on my Panny HVX200a.

Thanks.

what day was this shot? and what frequency group are your mics?

i had the same general problem with my sennheisers last monday. both sets were doing it. though my problem was more like a noise gate pushed too far.
i havent had time to try them again yet to see if its a permanent issue.

I shot this yesterday. And I used the default frequency, 518.200.

I haven't had time to test them out yet either. But I am guessing several things will yield positive results. Such as raising the Squelch and changing frequencies. Correct?

Also, kind of a stupid question: should I have the Panny on Mic or Line level when using a wireless lav? I was using Mic Level yesterday.

Thanks for the response!

it sounds like wind hair or something else is brushing the mic. Maybe even her shirt was brushing against it.
that is absolutely NOT something brushing against the mic. you can hear the overall volume changing. which would indicate something in the signal path. whether thats to do with hardware, connection or interference. thats the question. and my money is on the latter of the three.

Sorry I didn't answer this correctly. Group A.
mine are as well.

jason, i wont be able to test my mics until tomorrow. test yours again when you can an lets see if we can duplicate our problem

Yeah I can GUARANTEE the mic wasn't rubbing.

I was taking a look at Sennheiser's website, and it looks like if I switch to a vacant frequency and raise up the Squelch level on the units, it will probably fix the issue. I typed in my location from the shoot into here and it looks like several frequencies are vacant. So I am hoping it will be either the Squelch or the Frequency.

Let me know what you discover as well!

Could be a long shot but I've experienced that type of interference from a nearby electric fence on the ranch.

Did someone have a Blackberry on? I've had this happen when actor is getting a text or call on set. Same exact sound. All Blackberrys off, no more problem.

My guess is it is related to the metal coral. large steel obstructions can cause an RF signal to break up between the transmitter and the receiver. Other wireless systems that feature true diversity antennas (lectrosonics 200/400) may have had better results, but may also have had similar problems. One thing to try (if you have this problem again) is to raise the mic transmitter up on the talent (instead of on the waistband, affixed up high near shoulders), and also raise the receiver above the fence. Raising the receiver up and moving the receiver away from the large metal object may also fix the problem.
