Wireless: As close to Lectrosonics as you can get

I'm looking for a wireless solution that gets me as close to a good Lectrosonics setup (100-series mic, transmitter, receiver) as I can get w/o the expense - I have used the Sennheiser G2 gear with good luck, but plan to use the wireless setup to link my cam to my sound guy (mixer/boom) in a run and gun situation - I need power and reliability for peace of mind... I would rather not record on an external recorder as I don't have the necessary experience to handle timecode issues (nor do I have access to a digital recorder).

any ideas?

thanks.

Why not just rent the real deal, they are certainly worth it. You can probably work out a deal with your local rental house. I can't afford them myself but have become quite the wizard with hard wired lavs for my own projects.

no rental options in my area - have to go out of state - I prefer owning my own equipment when I can.

You can get the old lectrosonics VHF for something like 400 clams, never the less I'd recommend looking around all the consignment, and used sites like trew audio, pro sound, coffey sound, and location sound. Probably the best way to set up a package. Its too bad you can't rent because the only way I could see justifying the 5k to buy a couple of those things is if you are planning to rent them out with yourself as a sound mixer.

Rent. The. Gear.

With the budget you're giving, this is likely NOT a situation where you can own.
Renting is very affordable and any of the usual rental houses will ship anywhere.

Based on the title of the thread... you have 2 choices short of "real" Lectro sets... either the Sennheiser G2, or Lectro 100, which is Lectro "light"...

If you get a Lectro 100 you DEFINITELY... DEFINITELY want the 100mw transmitters NOT the LM transmitters.

To get them at your price... they must be used.

If you get the G2 you will have times where they are wonderful at the price (important distinction... AT THE PRICE)... and you will have days where they are miserable and you will hate them.

Wireless is NEVER guaranteed... that is why people buy $2K Lectro sets in the first place... they want to lower the odds of trouble... and raise the odds of good sound, but they STILL KNOW that wireless is never guaranteed... which is why you even see TWO lavs on people on high level gigs. (there are also two transmitters so Mr. Soundguy can switch over if one craps out)...

Now keeping this all in mind... there are pro level gigs that are ran with G2... not often... but for instance... remember the "fat" Jessica Simpson photos from National Inquirer? First thing I noticed is she had a G2 on her back... (point being SOME people risk important gigs even with G2)...

So... that's it... that's what you're looking at... like it or hate it... that's the deal.
