Winter Lilacs

one of the most unique entries i've seen. such a vivid world you created. and i can see how strongly you empathize with your characters. felt some of the pacing could be looked at, further explored. but on the whole this is a pretty solid piece. well done.

can you tell us a little about the set design? was that an existing location? what about the wallpaper? existing or dressed?

This Film felt top notch. I couldn't help but to really feel sorry for "Chet". Great performance "ma". I like how subtle the "Love" theme was delivered as well. Over all, great photography & lighting, sound was good, acting was great... I give it an A! This could easily be a very watchable feature.

Hooray for Winter Lilacs!!!

What a touching and sad film. Yet inspiring all the same.

Incredible performances makes this film really work. And the camera work is spotless. Someone here knows what they are doing! Cinematography, editing, the entire execution of this film is flawless.

And the dialogue... I loved it. So real.

Great, great work here! Congrats on a wonderful film.

Best line, "You might have to take that one again!" Perfect comic relief in the given situation. Really well written and directed!

Best to you!

Thanks everyone, we very much appreciate your generous feedback and the opportunity to be amongst such great films.

We shot at this beautiful location in Northeast Minneapolis. The house belongs to the family of our writer/director and is for the most part untouched save for a few additions/subtractions by our great producer Rachel. If you get a chance between watching all the other films, you can learn more about the house in a documentary that Steve and I have been producing for the better part of the last year.

well, i came to post, and everything has pretty much already been said.

great job, one of my favorites so far.

as was said some pacing could be looked at. note that i say 'looked' and not 'changed', etc.

very solid piece overall. this, to me, is what a short film should be, and feel, like.

One of my favorites.
Fantastic look, great cinematography.
A little one to many "ma's" but that can easily be overlooked.
I feel like this piece starts a lot stronger than it finishes.

Can't wait to watch that doc!

Brilliant, I love it, the acting, the dialogue, the look and the pacing were all spot on - have seen most of them now and this one really stands out for me - the timing & delivery of some of the last lines at the end of a scene was perfect, had me laughing out loud.
Bravo on making such a simple but beautiful little film, a lot of talent here, having seen a couple of your documentaries and the burger thing you did I can't wait for your next project, any plans?

I liked this a lot. Coming from the land of Ed Gein (sort of) I could see this piece going deeper in a long version.

Good shooting.

Very well done. Atmosphere was very unique and worked great with the material. Shots were very good, acting solid, and the location was perfect.

Loved the opening shots, such a simple way to establish his character.

I just have to bump this up again. Just watched it for the second time...
This movie is just incredible. The acting is so strong. The attention to detail in every single shot shows just how much patience was put into this.

I would love to hear how long it took you to shoot this. Did you use storyboards?

Really outstanding work!

Cheers,

Mike

This movie rocks! I really enjoyed watching it. Great story too, but what i really love is the image quality, the DOF is sooo perfect! Excellent job on this one.

This is my favorite so far. The acting was stellar, and I couldn't help but feel the reserved frustration from Chet. The opening scene could not have been done better. The house was the perfect location, and the production design was flawless. You created this sad world populated by one and a half. Chet gave off a kind of guilty desperation that really came through. This made me want to watch more and see what happens to Chet and Ma.

I agree with Matty G that the number of Ma's stuck out, but at the same time it kind of reinforces Ma's condition in that Chet feels the need to remind Ma that he's speaking to her by addressing her every time. A sad but humorous and tragically believable short. Very well done guys

I watched this 3 times. The acting was unbelievable. I’m guessing that the woman was a close friend of yours? After the second time I watched it, the bathroom scene really makes this a special piece. Well done..

Good Sam

This one is good. From start to finish. A sad story in a way, but one that sure brings out the meaning of love. Wow! Both great actors too.

This film was excellent.

There was a lot of character depth and the story was interesting to see played out.

Aside from great acting and story, the cinematography was just beautiful. It looked quite cinematic and I'll be giving it many more viewings.

Wow. This was phenomenal.

First, the story is great. It so subtle - beautiful and painful.

Second, the performances are amazing. The two of them just broke my heart.

Lastly, technically I just loved everything about it - the cinematography, the edit, the score.

Really, an amazing short film.

This is the kind of film I aspire to make some day.

I'm back already.

I looked through the thread and I apologize if I missed it, but could you tell us a little about what this shot with (camera, 35mm adapter, and lights) and where you found your actors?
