windscreen/blimp for AT4073a

hey all.

i will very soon, need to purchase a quality wind protector for my exterior boom AT4073a, but something that will also work with my hypercardioid AT4053a

so what do you guys think?

outdoors, good wind protector. And lets keep the price within.. lets say... 400 ish range or less.

i have a ktek boompole.

does anything else need to be purchased to attach a blimp to it?

The Ktek blimp should work for that. I would double check the diameter and/or call Trew/Coffey/etc to confirm.

Good luck

I just bought a K-Tek Zepp. I have to say, it's pretty nice. You have to have the fur on at all times, but it's really nice. Also, the entire zep is flexible enough that you don't have to worry about it denting or cracking on you like a Rycote might. Very light too.

is it a problem always having the fur on? Does it degrade the quality of footage if its not sufficiently windy?

Is there a better alternative or something maybe a step up that you would suggest?

Well, the fur reduces some of the higher frequencies, though the effect isn't too noticeable. You can always go Rycote, but they run around 600-700 bucks(twice the price of K-Tek) and they're a bit heavier too, but you get the added bonus of having a pistol grip shockmount. You can use those without the fur and still reduce a decent amount of wind noise. I prefer the K-Tek after a long day of booming though.

k well, lets bring it back to what i need

400 price range, good wind protector. work with shotgun and hypercardioid.

so if its 600 bucks or more, forget it.
its its 500 or more forget it

just want the best bang for the buck. And maybe something i can upgrade, such as those blimps? Can you buy fur for them later on?

I don't see what's wrong with the K-Tek. It's around $330 and the build quality is really nice. The only blimp that is cheaper than that are the ones on e-bay and you can't use those without the fur either. If you don't want a zep, you can always get a Rycote softie for $100 bucks and then use regular foam for low wind conditions and then the softie for high wind. Though, you won't get the same effect as a zeppelin which creates an area of dead space around the mic.

you can buy extencion xlr xlr barrel and use the 4053 in the same wind shield .
that will bring the mic head much closer to the end .
the k-teck worls wery good outside , good $ for what it does ratio.

the ktek zepp, is it just a big thing of fur or does it have the blimp inside of it? I'm not sure i understand how you can't remove the fur?

Dare i ask for someone to give me some links? I am still learning in this section.

oleg,

thta thing looks really long. my longest shotgun is probably no more than 8 inches in length. and i know the closest mic is the best mic. so is there something shorter i can get?

cmmon, where are the pro audio people at? This, in all honesty, should be a far far simple question for those who are farmiliar with this more than i.

question, this blimp looks very different from other ones that i have seen.

the pores seem to be ocmpletely empty, allowing wind to pass through them easily, where as the other blimpbs ive seen seem to have a sort of protection.. does this effect anything? would this be pointless to use without the fur around it?

what i am saying, is this is pointless if i want something htat is modular.

someone please point me in the direction of a good ( what are they called... blimps?)

those big cylindrical tubes with what appears to be mesh around, which, i BELIEVE you can later buy, or fabricate, furs to place around it to dull the wind noise.

again, for a medium size shitgun and short hypercardioid.

1. there is no modular for these sizes
2 . i already told you what you can do
3 its not in your price range
4 how hard is to make search in Google
5 see ya

Jonathan,

You have to decide what you want - do you want a fully modular system that doesn't always require a windsock attached? If so, raise your budget.

All of the thought leaders in this group have said the same thing - it is an excellent choice. Why don't you listen to them? You keep trying to find excuses to ignore their advice.

And here's one more piece of advice (that you probably will ignore, but here it is anyway): I always work with the windsock on my blimp when working outdoors. The slight (very slight) loss is more than made up for by the extra wind protection. You can't take a wind blast across the mic out in post, so why risk it? It adds a bit of weight, but still not enough to stress out over.

Just buy the k-tek. No one here has ever complained about K-tek's products.

If you want a zeppelin that you can use without fur, you have to go Rycote. There is no other zepp I know of that can be used without fur. So get ready to spend a good amount of money.

Second, the K-Tek system is fully modular. It comes with a K-GPS shockmount with adapters to be used with any basket. You can mix and match the shockmount with different size baskets, but it'll cost you a lot.

I'm using a K-Tek Medium for my MKH416 and it's the perfect size. I'd recommend the smaller basket for your hyper, but if you got a barrel extension like previously stated in this forum, you can fit your hyper inside the medium zeppelin too.
